SOURCE: Black and Decker Electric Lawn Mower MM850 wiring diagram

I have repaired mines. It was found in the trash dump, just before street curb side trash collection. It is a very sophisticated lawn mower. It taken me a month to restore it. The problem is the housing is poor design and does not hold the pin switch securely. This is not a simple on/off switch. It is switch module with two momentary switches built in to it to work simultaneously. The hot is a normally open momentary switch and the neutral is a normally closed momentary switch. Two things must occurred simultaneously for the lawn mower to work. The AC hot has to close and the neutral to open. This is a split phase AC motor. The switch has four connectors to it. The first two has black wires to it, for the hot, that is normally open. The second two has a white wire and red wire to it for the motor's start up winding. The orange connects with the plug's white, neutral. A new substitute switch will be two individual momentary switch, one for the two black wires will be normally open and the two for the red and white wires from the motor start coil will be normally close. It will take two fingers to operate the lawn mower. I recommend you to buy a new and each switch from Black and Decker.
The problem with the system is not the switch, but the poorly designed switch box housing. Often, there is nothing wrong with the switch. I tested mines and it works fine. The problem is the switch box housing does not keep the switch in the correct position for the higher tension spring lever to press against it to operate. I use small washers to stack between the rear of the switch inside and reassembled the switch box upside down by turning the handle upside down, so the washers and switch do not fall out. Once I am finished assembling the switch box and position it on the handle, then I position the handle back to the normal top side and attach the handle back to the lawn mower. I am finished.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AC_motor#Split-phase_induction_motor

"Split Phase Motors
Split phase ac motors are widely used for low power applications as for example in oil burners, furnace blowers, garage door openers and major appliances. Such motors employ separate run and start windings connected in parallel across the acpower source. When the motor is initially energized both windings are energized, and when the rotor speed reaches about eighty-five percent of the normal running speed the start winding is disconnected from the circuit. Various devices are utilized forthis latter purpose and include centrifugal switches and current and voltage relays.

A problem which is characteristic of these motors is that they have a relatively short operating life. The principal reason for this is the failure of the switching devices used to cut out the start windings when the rotors approach the normalrunning speeds.Failure of these switching devices in turn cause the start windings to burn out.

One of the reasons for the failure of these switching devices is the high currents which they are carrying at the time the contacts open. Attempts to increase contact life by use of improved designs and materials have not been altogethersuccessful. Another disadvantage associated with these switching devices is that they are necessarily quite large and occupy a substantial space in the motor housing." -from another web site.

You should price a new wiring harness, around $80 so there is not much reason to spend a lot of time trying to find shorts or open wiring.

2006 honda cbf 250 wiring diagram needed... or need to know what wires are what out of the cdi/ecu, I have tried everything and cannot find anything... engine has been put into gokart and need to rewire...

from ignition switch red wire supplies power from the battery to the ignition switch, black wires are live when the switch is on but have nothing to do with the cdi The cdi is supplied by the generator on your engine.Green wires from switch are all earthing wires. The black and white wire coming from the switch is the wire that puts the cdi to earth to disable the ignition in the off position .

1989 dodge 250 the red ignition wire is getting hot and melting in two when the key is turned to the run position

Blue wire to ignition switch, from alternator voltage regulator.( 12 volts ) ECU power wire, Red wire to battery terminal. Blue wire goes from alternator to the ignition switch. The voltage regulator senses the incoming voltage from the blue wire. ) it grounds the green field wire This energizes the alternator field, and the alternator begins to produce a charge and sends it to the battery via the main output wire. When the voltage regulator senses 14 volts from the blue field wire, it cuts the ground to the green field wire. Good-Day!

Why key start for craftsman lawn mower doesn't work

The ignition switch could be bad. NAPA has replacement switches. Disconnect the old one and take it with you and have it matched up. Be sure to draw a diagram of where the wires go. Everything needs to match perfectly.

I lost my key to 01 gsxr600 and need to know how to hotwire my bike

Well you can just cut the wires to the ignition switch and intall a toggle switch. However, you will need a schematic to know how to attach the wires to the new switch.

Most newer vehicles (yours included) have a lot more contacts than just the three you are talking about. I have a 2001 dodge grand caravan and it has 13 different wires running to the ignition switch. The point here is that you will have to combine several wires on one contact which may or may not do the same things the original switch does which may lead to all sorts of strange problems with the engine, transmission and all the other accessories on the vehicle. The other problem is since you will have more things running on one contact, your new switch may be overloaded and prematurely fail or even start a fire since some of the main feeder wires to the ignition switch may not be fused small enough to prevent overheating the switch. A factory/OEM switch may be more expensive but in the long run will save way more problems than the cheaper switch will. To specifically answer your question, most over-the-counter vehicle service manuals available at any auto parts store or in some libraries have generic wiring diagrams that should show you which wire would go where.

I need an ignition switch wiring diagram

Hi, Nameisonlytwoltrs what a strange name, by the way, nice novella. The solution to this is simple, most ignition switches for motorcycles/scooters have identifying letters stamped near their connection terminals, B/BAT/+ for power input, I/IGN for the ignition circuit, L/LT for the light circuit, A/ACC for the accessories circuit. Now if your switch has no markings you going to need a 12-volt battery, a test light, and a jumper wire with alligator clips. If your switch has 4 terminals there will be 16 different possible combinations for the process of elimination. Connect your jumper wire to the battery positive terminal and connect/hold the other end to any terminal on the switch. With your test light connected to the battery negative terminal start probing the remaining terminals with the ignition key switched to the on position and observe when the test light illuminates completing the circuit. Move the jumper wire to a different terminal and repeat the process. Keep doing this until you find the right combination that makes everything work.
Good luck and have a wonderful day.
