the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

SOURCE: wd my book hard drive wont transfer some files

I suggest you take a note from the message of which file/files is/are causing the problems and rename them. The whole file path counts toward the length, so if a number of files are under a folder with a long name, they might all be triggering the problem, and renaming the folder with the long name, to a shorter name, could solve many of the individual file problems. Aim for a full path name length of less than 256 characters.

And for files with symbols it can't read, have a careful look at all the characters in the full path name, and re-name any files using unusual characters. Stick to using alphabetic and numeric characters. If you know some files with special characters that you have successfully copied, then those characters would be OK too. I think comma, space, plus sign, minus sign, underscore, parentheses are OK, and there are some others.

Some applications will let you save files with long file names in their working folder, without checking the full path name, then when the operating system comes along and bulk-copies things, it's dealing with the full path name and stalls.

Another possibility I haven't tried, is to go into a folder with long file names, and compress everything into a zip file (give it a short name), then when the bulk-move utility moves it all, it doesn't have to deal directly with the long file names. You can unpack it at the other end. As I said, I haven't tried it, but it might work well for you if you don't want to rename the individual files.

Good luck on the big move.

My 1.5 tb mybook has been formatted to fat32, and i cant watch movies on my ps3 no more loads up files really slow even freezes. Also disappears on my laptop sometimes then reappears. But transfers and...

FAT32 was the file type used for the early Windows operating systems. With the release of Windows NT and XP it switched to NTFS file system. FAT32 is still used however to transfer data between Mac and PC. The downside of FAT32 is the files read slower and file size cannot exceed 4GB. If you do not use a Mac I would suggest using the Disk Management utility in Control Panel under Computer Management to convert it to NTFS.

External hard drive not recognized

Some of the externals have mapping issues in Windows.  Although the TB shows in devices, you may need to remap it (right click on My Computer for mapping options) and in some cases, changing the drive letter will fix your problem.  There's really no 1 definitive solution for these.  If you're unable to fix the problem by remapping or changing the drive letter, you can partition the drive to recover your data.  As far as the slow transfer rate goes, almost all externals are formatted in FAT.  This has issues of its own with safely removing devices and slow transfer rates.  I prefer to format my externals and flash drives in NTSF for more reliability.  Best of luck.

do you have 2 hard drives or a partitioned hard drive? anyhow go to my computer check and see if the drive is listed. If not you may have to reinstall it. If the drive has become defective there are readers that can transfer your info. You also can take it to Geek Squad or other service and they can transfer your info to a new external drive ( i suggest an external TB drive you can get the for $150 and they are well worth it) for music purposes and archiving. Portability alone makes it a great choice.

Hi i got a buffalo tb external hardrive and the pc wont recognise it now after i transfered alot of data when the pc froze and i had to turn pc off mid transfer . please can you help

It is probable that since the transfer did not complete, the data on the external drive will be corrupt.

Uninstall the external drive then reinstall and format the ext drive.

You should then be able to begin the data transfer process again.

It just sounds like bad luck that your pc froze mid transfer.
When you try again, do not use the pc for any other uses until the transfer has completed.

Regards and let me know if this works for you.
