My lap top stopped charging. when i plugged ac adapter in it still does nothing. The adapter is good, checked with meter. I let it sit not plugged in a couple days and it started charging and it worked for about an hour than shut off again and wouldnt charge again. Is there anything i can check? The ac adapter is good and i think the battery is also. Does this laptop run on ac power if the battery is removed? The purple charge lit wont come on at all.

Hi Kenneth, Have you checked to see if the charge connector on the laptop is loose when you plug the charger into it? You can see if it is by plugging it in and wiggle it around a bit. The charge light on the laptop might stop blinking if its moved and contact is made.
Chances are the power jack in the laptop that is to blame. It's common for the solder connections holding the jack to the motherboard to break because of the power plug flexing. One way to check is to keep the laptop steady and wiggle the power plug. If the power indicator flickers, that's what's wrong.
The good news is that this is usually repairable. The bad news is that not all service shops are willing to get into this level of repair. The motherboard needs to be removed from the computer so the connections can be repaired. Sometimes the board needs some mechanical repair as well, and occasionally the only way to fix the trouble is to replace the board. Most shops want to replace the motherboard right off.
Call around to shops in your area and see who's willing to try soldering the board. That is usually all that's needed to get you going again.
I have a new gateway laptop with windows 7 and today it said plugged in not charging 8%. I tried everything and nothing worked so I turned it off and unplugged it and took the battery out and put it back in and it started charging...hopefully this works.
1. connect the ac adapter from a known good power source. 2. plugin the battery to the laptop. 3. check bios if batt is recognize or performing normally (to do this turn on laptop keep tapping f2 to boot to the bios options) 4. just leave the laptop with the ac adapter connected and it will charge laptop automatically, just leave it for about 4 hours.
It could be one of three things. It could be a bad battery, a bad ac adapter, or the recharging circuitry could be bad. I would try pulling the battery out, and see if the laptop will startup and run strictly off of the ac adapter. If that does not work, you have a bad ac adapter. If that works, and the battery has any charge left, try running it strictly on the battery. If it doesnt work, you have a bad battery. If it does work, the circuitry is bad and you will probably need new motherboard. One other thing you can check is where the ac adapter and battery plug into the laptop, and make sure there is no corrosion that could be causing a short.
