Most Philips/Magnavox VCR uses "PL" to indicate that the unit is on Parental Lock. Push and hold the power button on the remote control and wait for the unit to power up. This should be within 7 seconds.
Additionally, most (but not all) Philips/Magnavox VCRs are sub-contracted to Funai. Pls try here for Funai downloads of user's manual.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
I need to find out how to record on theVHQ940. I bought a used VHQ940 without a manual or remote. My son used a universal remote to turn it on to my Magnavox TV, but don't know how to program it to record. I need a manual.
That seems to be SAMSUNG's answer for a lot of their problems. Please to note I have read much too many of their manual. If you didn't catch that - this is the worse written manual I've seen in my 34 yrs. in electronics. My choice is to learn their language, put up with this type of garbage or write this off as a learning experience. I choose to exclude SAMSUNG from my list of considerations for any future equipment purchases.
These old Quasars (matshushita made) have underdesigned power
supplies. The electrolytic caps on the output voltages need high
voltage ratings. Does it make a high pitch sing? Your unit
is running out of power when it gets to the most difficult part of its
loading sequence. Try replacing all those caps. Some guy at
Matsushita (Panasonic, Magnavox, Quasar) designed many many VCR's and
it took him about 10 years to learn that electrolytic caps don't work
too good at the high frequencies that switching power supplies have
