Outside surface gets hot to touch

The most likely problem is a dirty or clogged up condenser grill (under your unit). When the condenser grill is dirty it can get rid of the system heat build up, so it transfers the heat to the cabinet.

Remove the front grill and vacuum it the best you can, a small brush would help loosen up the dirt. Then move the unit away from the wall and remove the rear panel and use an air compressor to blow it out.

Make sure that the condenser fan is operating or that could also be the problem.

If none of this remedies the problem then your unit could need to be charged with freon. Because if the freon is low the compressor has to work harder to cool.

Fridge running warmer than it should, Cooling fan on back doesn't turn, the compressor/condensor running very hot , and no new ice being made. Cleaned the cooling grid which was full of dust.

Here is the basic idea on how to keep the refrigerator, air conditioner, or vacuum cleaner to work properly. Air is moved by an electric fan or blower in order for that product to work properly. If air movement is blocked the fridge won't get cold, the central air conditioner won't cool enough, the vacume cleaner won't clean as well. Check on your fridge's air movement by inspecting the bottom of the fridge for dust and cob webs. Remove the front bottom clip-on plastic grill. Or also even access the lower back of the fridge by removeing the screws holding up the heavy cardboard cover to see inside. Blockage of air flow will prevent a fridge from getting cold. Just like a vacuum cleaner stops working when the bag is filled with dust and fibers. The air could be blocked by the accumulation of dust and fibers. Look under your fridge if it is cloged, it will look just like the stuff on a dirty central air filter.

Dust and fiber buildup blocking the fridge's air movement from back to front (or visa-versa) of your fridge will slowly (years) prevent how good it cools. The build-up of dust and cobwebs prevents your fridge from cooling (more specifically prevents the heat to disapate from the metal heat disipating fins attached to the metal tubes to be blown off by the fans air). OK! Remedy for a vacuum cleaner REPLACE THE CLOGED VACUUM BAG.

Remedy for your fridge manually REMOVE THE CLOGING DUST AND FIBERS FROM UNDER YOUR FRIDGE. SORRY fridge manufacturers do not provide a dust filter like the vacume cleaner and central air systems manufacturers do. You have to figger out the best way you can clean it. Possibly vacuum with a crevice tool, or use a small brush than vacuum. The extreme would be unplug the fridge ( so you won't get electrocuted) bring a water hose into the kitchen and spray water at cobweb buildup at the bottom fridge, than wet vac the floor then wait 20 minutes to dry before pluging the fridge back into the electric outlet.
When you stand in front of your fridge and you hear the fridge electric motor turn on, the fan will blow air.The fridge

Came home and all the ice has melted in icemaker and everything defrosted. Some cold air is blowing, but not much. A distinct clicking noise happens every few minutes. No power outage and we tried...

Hi,
There is hope but not a great deal. That clicking sound you hear is the compressor (that part of the refrigerator that creates cold air) trying to start. It may be very hot. The reason usually is that there is dust clogging the coils at the base of the unit that must be cleaned out. There is a fan motor, usually mounted in the back of the fridge in the base next to the compressor. That fan may not be turning. If that is the case, the compressor will shut down to prevent overheating (a good thing).
Here is what you should do.
0 Pull out the fridge taking care not to damage the water line to the ice maker
1 Unplug it to let it cool down completely.
2 Put your salvageable food into camping coolers with bags of ice.
3 Purchase a long skinny refrigerator coil cleaning brush (I've seen these at Walmart)
4. Change into real work clothes. This will be a dirty job.
5 Remove the "grille" on the front of the fridge, at the base. Just pull it straight off.
6 Brush out the dust from the coils from the front bottom.
7 Replace the grill.
(Sorry. Your not done.)
8 When the fridge is out from the wall (you will want to sweep and mop what you see back there)
9 Remove the cardboard cover from the rear. (You will likely need 1/4 inch or 5/16 inch nut driver to remove hex head screws). Observe the cardboard covor as you will need to bend it to remove, after the screws holding it are off. (You may also want to wear gloves keep fiberglass from getting onto your skin.)
If you accidentally tear the cardboard, don't fret as it can usually be fixed with duct tape.
10 Now after all that,(which really doesn't take long). You will be looking at a black metal case with small pipes running out of it. That is the compressor.
You will also be looking at (depending on the design) a condenser fan.
11 If there is a Condenser Fan (usually on side-by-side refrigerators) then finding out if it works or not will be part of the diagnostic steps.
12 Plug in the fridge after it has cooled down completely (several hours) and see if the compressor comes on.
It may come on instantly. If it does check to see if the condenser fan blade is turning.
If it is not turning and the compressor starts to run. shut the Fridge down.
13 Check to see if there is an obstruction to it turning (such as a small toy). If there was an obstruction, plug the fridge back in and see if the fan now turnes. If it does, you have likely repaired the broken component.
14 If the fan blades does not turn, unplug the fridge again and replace the condenser fan motor.
You will need some tools to do this such as a 1/4" socket set, Wiring tools, Wire Stripper, Wire Nuts, Wire Ties. A handy man level of experience is required for replacement of this part.
15 When done replacing it (or removing the obstruction), make sure the back cardboard panel is reinstalled. It is vital to the efficient operation of the fridge.

16 Plug the fridge back in. Give it two hours of running time to see if it will start to cool. Probably will. If not, there could have been a refrigerant leak. If so, only a professional is licensed to do the work. If there is a refrigerant leak, then the repair is likely not recommended.
I hope this helps
Best Regards,
Mark

The freezer is staying @ 10deg, set at -2deg. I had a message "vacuum condenser" I did turned of & then on message has not appeared for more than a day. no new message, seems to be constantly...

I\'ve been struggling trying to keep our 2 goldens dog hair from the coils of our 8 year old Kenmore side by side with "W" compressor coils, but like everyone else was unable to clean past the first set of coils.

I came up with this solution that worked to get much of the big stuff, hair and bunnies, off of the further back coils. Not perfect but much better than nothing.

Removing the back lower panel I was able to snake a crevice attachment from our vacuum down the right side of the coils (left side looking from back)

I made a compressed air contraption to blow the dust/hair across the coils using a compressed air nozzle that I added a 10" long tube and a 90 degree deflector

From the front of the fridge, on the left side of the coils, I snaked the compressed air nozzle towards the back and started directing the air stream blowing towards the vacuum crevice tool at the opposite side of the coils.

The compressed air dislodged the hair/dust enough that the vacuum was able to suck it away. Again, not perfectly but certainly much better than I was able to clean the coils in the past.

I suppose you could use a can of compressed air and add some sort of deflector if you don\'t have a compressor.

I then got to thinking how to prevent the dust from accumulating on the coils, I\'m going to try an air conditioner filter. I cut it slightly oversized to fit the front opening then split it in half to make it thinner for more air flow.

Picture taken before making the filter thinner. For years I had my calendar remind me monthly to vacuum the coils but now hopefully I\'ll be able to simply change the air filter.

Unit never seems to stop running, always running

There are several things that could cause this issue. If you have a condenser fan underneath the fridg that has stopped running due to poor lubrication, maybe debris blocking the fan blades or a dirty condenser especially if you have pets. You can clean the **** from under the fridg (remove the grill on the front and vacuum out) or if the fan is not running with the compressor as it should repair or replace it the fan motor. Also a worn out door gasket can cause excess run time.

Divider strip between fridge and freezer is hot

First take the grill off at the bottom under the doors look at the grate under the frig That is your condenser it will probably be covered in dust clean it off the see if you can fill air blowing under the frig there is a fan under there that keeps that coil cool and it runs around the door to keep condensation from build around the doors if no air is blowing take the back panel behind the Frig and there should be a fan running if the compressor is running this will also cause the compressor to over heat and will not cool as well but it might just need to be cleaned Good luck
