Sorry to say you may have a burned out motor. i replaced my motor when i had that problem and it worked. Pretty simple to do if you are handy with tools.

I bet the Worm Gear is broken. Disconnect the power, remove screws on motor enclosure, remove housing, look for broken plastic gear pieces.
You can buy a replacement gear kit from sears (call them first, with your model number, to make sure).
It'll take you about a half hour to fix it.

The motor hums but doesn't move

pull the garage door latch freeing it from the motor, and try it that way, if it works then, its a bad(weak)motor.

My garage door opened fine ... when i went to shut it. i get a 3 sec humm from the unit and nothing else

IT MAY BE JAMBED AGAINST THE OPEN SAFETY BOLT.

IF THE TRAVELER IS JAMMED AGAINST THE BOLT YOU CAN EITHER LOOSEN THE CHAIN OR REMOVE THE COVER, UNPLUG THE UNIT AND BACKWIND THE MOTOR BY HAND.

ONCE THE BIND IS RELEASED ADJUST THE UP LIMIT TO STOP AT LEAST AN INCH OR TWO BEFORE IT REACHES THE BOLT.

My stanley garage door opener motor runs but it won't open or close my door

If the motor runs and the chain does not then you have stripped the gears and will need to replace them. If the motor runs, the chain moves but the door does not move then the trolley is not attached or needs to be replaced. Thanks BB

Garage door chain isnt engaged. motor is running

SOUNDS LIKE A BAD GEAR KIT

IF THE CHAIN MOVES BUT THE DOOR DOESN'T IT WOULD BE THE TROLLEY RELEASE. IF THE CHAIN DOESN'T MOVE IT WOULD BE THE GEAR KIT.
HOPE THIS HELPS
