Question about Western Digital My Book Pro Edition II WDG2TP10000 1 TB FireWire 400 (1394a) Hard Drive

1 Answer

Unrecognized Drive, Unusable Files

When my drive connects to the computer, it has unusable file-retrieval times (plus videos tend to break up constantly). That's when it connects. Most of the time, it either sits there, noiseless, and unrecognized, or it starts to whir up the normal soft way it likes, but then it clicks a few times, the soft whir dies, and the crazy heavy-usage load whir that I don't particularly like blazes up for about 10 seconds, then dies down as the soft whir kicks up again and the cycle repeats. What is happening to my beloved Dark Star? She's such a good friend, I can't bear to lose her.

Some MP3 files play, other don't.

could be an issue with the format of the file .. or could be that there is a virus on the computer attaching itself to the mp3 hence the player is not able to read them .. but the system is able to play them anyway.

try downloading a new file and see if that works. if that file is working fine . .then there could be issues on the computer causing the files to be unusable.

Unusable recovered photos

You probably recovered the thumbnails of the picture, as Windows often does that to speed up picture loading. Look for other picture files.

I was copying a big folder from My Passport Essential to my HDD (Windows 7) and I cancel the operation. After this the Drive become unusable and Windows continuing asking me to format it. I think this is...

> the Drive become unusable and Windows continuing asking me to format it.

Either the blocks on the disk normally occupied by the "Table Of Contents" for the files on the disk has been accidentally overwritten by "random" bytes, or those blocks have become unreadable.

Say 'yes' to allow Windows to reformat the disk, and write a new (but "empty") "Table Of Contents" file onto the disk.

Acomdata is only clicking but is not being recognized by computer

Sorry to inform you, that once your hard drive clicks, it's already dead and unusable. It is called the "Click of Death" for hard drives.

You may want to try bringing your HD to the nearest data recovery center and see if they could recover the files from the HD to another media.

Thank you and good luck!

Computer won't recognize hard drive anymore

The clicking sounds and lack of response makes this sound like a dying hard drive to me, sorry to say.

I would try it on another computer if possible.

There are data retrieval experts but they tend to be expensive, files need to be quite important to make this worthwhile.

The directory is corrupted and unreadable

The most common cause of this is removing the USB drive without clicking "Safely remove hardware" in the task bar. Especially if data is being written to the drive, this can result in corrupt files and may make the drive unusable.

I'm sorry to say the data may be unrecoverable--ALWAYS make backups!

Two things to try before you write-off the data as lost forever.

One: Try booting the computer in SAFE mode and see if you can pull files off the USB Drive--you may have to give the drive administrative privileges.

Two: Download and run the trial version of the BadCopy data recovery program at this link:

http://www.jufsoft.com/badcopy/

To make the drive usable again, find it in My Computer, RIGHT click on it and click "Format." The choose "Quick" format. A quick format should make it usable again.

If the BadCopy program could find no files to recover: After the quick format, you may be able to pull some of the files off simply in windows. If not, run BadCopy again: It just may find some files after the quick format.

A full format erases ALL data which may remain on the drive. Only use quick format if you expect to recover anything.

Good Luck!

I accidentally dropped my 350 GB WD Passport external hard drive and now my computer does not recognize it. Is it still repairable and can i recover the files stored there. Do you have a service center...

Try it another computer.

If it still fails, there are alot of online companies that will be able to retrieve the data for you- although Im guessing the drive its self will be unusable.

Problem open up my maxtor one touch 500gb to retieve photos

first, recover your files. You will need to use hard drive deleted photo recovery program like Asoftech Photo Recovery, you can follow this video to recover deleted photo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNxApz_PBW8

I've had to use it many times in the past but in this case you need to plug that drive into another system as an external drive or slave drive and run the software from there. It will rebuild the drive and hopefully recover the files.

After you get back your files, you can then format the drive and reinstall your system.
