Mine did this also. Its been years since i fixed it but the problem was caused by a ribbon cable located in the front by the volume control. I took the cover off, reseated the cable and it has worked fine since.

Onkyo TX SR502: The remote has stoped working. is it repairable, or do I need to buy a new one? Mike D.

Read this procedure to possibly fix the remote:
http://remotes.com/remotes/servlet/rs?a=Display&contents=help_deadremote&uuid=A12963989782821
They also sell replacement remotes.

Zoom in on the picture of the original remote provided on the site (or look at your own) and get the actual remote model number.

or check eBay: search for "(model of the device or the remote) remote", check the 'include description' box. Usually cheaper than the vendors.

My remote control doesn't work and hasn't for a long time. I purchased a new remote which worked for 2 days then that quit as well. I'm thinking it's the infrared on the receiver itself. ...

HERE'S THE ANSWER TO YOUR PROBLEM:

The problem of your first remote could have been the following:

1. battery - maybe the batteries are already used up and needs to be recharged in case it is rechargeable.

2. factory defect - since your second remote just worked for two days, it could be that the culprit is the factory defect. It's a defect out from the negligence of the manufacturer.

Here's what you've got to do: Since you have already used two remote controls, contact your service provider and tell them about your problem. They will definitely be willing to help you solve it.

Your problem is solved. Thanks...

My remote control stopped working except for the on/off button. what can i do to get it going again?

Start by changing the battery's, then if the problem still persists try and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then see if maybe it took, if not then it might me time to replace the remote. I hope this could help. if not please let me know and i will try to help you out.

Have you looked at the manual?

The specific product you're inquiring about is not showing in your post. Name the make and model first, then we'll look for the manual. Then (maybe) find a solution. You might find it at the manufacturer's support site or these guys...

Infrared on remote works (checked with digital camera), but no response from the receiver except when receiver is on and I press the AV1 and I/O buttons together, the receiver turns off. Does the infrared...

The remote is capable of running other types of devices. It may 'think' it's configured for something other than the receiver, like a CD player. See page 50 in the manual.

To reset the remote to factory, pres AV1, I/O and MASTER VOL all at the same time.

Hi William
Assuming that you have tried changing the batteries in the remote (and put the batteries in the right way round) then the chances are that your remote control unit has failed.
Original Kenwood remotes can be bought here http://kenwoodremote.com/

Universal remote controls are widely available in electrical stores and on the internet. You will need to find the right set up code - you should be able to find the code on the same site.

I have an AVR 500 that seems to work fine except for the factory remote. The remote controls my TV and other devices which makes me think the remote is fine. My other programmable remotes also have no...

I think you pretty much nailed it.The remote works as stated. If you can see the infra-red sensor in the receiver, clean off over it with a little windex and paper towel.Make sure it is not obstructed. You probably have tried to operate it from about a foot away or less.If the other programmable remotes are universal ones they probably are not compatible.Since you say it is a factory remote,I assume it is for the Harman and did not need programming. If nothing works,it is most likely the sensor in the receiver which is very very very rare. When that happens,I always say it must have been made on a Friday or a Monday because either people came in to work hungover or they couldn't wait to leave for the weekend.Depending on the age,you may want to contact Harman to find out about warranty repair. For instance,if it just expired say 6 months ago,be very persistent, when someone answers immediately ask for a supervisor,if they won't do anything call back and ask for another supervisor because there are usually at least more than 1 on hand, and just basically bug the heck out of them.Someone, somewhere may eventually give in.That 1 little part will end up costing probably minimum $15 just to ship.(receivers are heavy so maybe more)$40-$60/hour labor.Parts price markup minimum of 20%.I saw online that your particular one sold for about $200.If you have to spend $100 for one tiny part, that is baloney.Good luck!
