Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

Slow oscillation, clicking in control panel, dimming lights

When washer is full and begins to churn, it churns slow, there is a clicking sound in the control panel and the lights in the laundry room dim down. Changing the wash/rinse speed setting does not work, still same slow, weak and strained operation. Never had a problem before. Purchased in 1999.

Hum. 1st I would check make sure power company is sending you the right Voltage.

2nd Make sure did not trip one side of breaker, Reset if needed.

3rd Pulling electrical circuits down could mean Start & or run capacitor is failing or failed. Or worse motor is failing.

Unless you know how to troubleshoot electrical systems might leave to tech Capacitors store voltage/amps & can harm or kill you.

I f I can help more MSG me back. Hope this helped. Please rate. Thank you. Good Luck!

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,

Smelly washing is probably caused by waste water left in the machine and the washer is never getting to the point where it will take the softener as you are advancing it to drain ;-0(

I would gently suggest as a first step that you clean the drain motor/pump lint tray/filter. So many 'faults' are caused by blocked filters and many machines will not even go to rinse or spin or release the door lock if there is any water still left inside.
Following are my complete and generic guidance notes for checking both the drain motor filter and the drain motor ;-0)
REMOVE POWER AND ENSURE YOU HAVE A WATER RECEPTACLE/RAGS TO SOAK UP THE WATER WHICH IS BOUND TO POUR OUT (alternatively use a wet vac as sensibly suggested by VinnyB1234!)
If you are unsure where the filter is, it is often behind the front lower (kick) panel (or in some machines at the rear in an awkward position!). These panels are either held on by (plasic) screws or will just pull off. Most filters are held in by a round cover/knob. Sometimes the filter will not come out with the cover and you will have to persuade it to come out to play.
It's surprising what people have found in theirs! It is always worthwhile checking it on a regular basis.
Now- whilst the filter is removed it is normally possible to see the drain motor and ensure it is not jammed by a foreign object such as a needle or a toothpick. It should be able to be turned by hand/finger- the power IS OFF!
At this point it is also possible to test if the motor works. No clothes or water in the machine, select a spin cycle and put the power back on. You should be able to see the motor turning at some point, possibly straight away. Using something suitable like a glove see if it is easy to briefly slow the motor down. If it is easy then the motor is malfunctioning.

If this has assisted you please consider a 4 thumbs up for the rating.
Thanks and good luck!

Washer comes on during spin or antime its supposed to be churning or spinning, but does not spin. the drain pump comes on but no spin??????fridgeaire/electrolux model fw933f50

Hello
Check the door saftey switch, unplug washer from wall and remove door switch.Be carefull not to damage wires and leave enough wire, beacause you may be putting it back in.

Once door switch is out tie wires together with a wire nut and tape, plug in washer and run.

If washer runs ok you know it was the switch,if not then its either the main board or the timer.

All lights flashing!

I resolved the issue. The drain plug was clogged. To repair this first unplug the power from the machine. Then remove three screws holding the lower front panel on. Grab a bucket and put it under the "plug" on your right. Hold your nose as this part may smell. Slowly unscrew the drain plug and allow all contents to empty into the bucket. Now you know why the machine refused to work properly! Clean the drain plug and secure it tightly back in place. Put the panel back on. Plug in the power. And this should resolve your issue. Now go tell the wife how hard you had to work to fix her washing machine, duck, and do a load or two to help her out! Happy Washing!

Get a repairman in to check for a damaged drive train on the washer and an electrician in to check the wiring in your house

Switching a high power electric shower on can cause some voltage drop which in turn causes the lights to dim for a short period.

But having a washer stalling on wash doing it sounds as if you have some major issues with the house wiring.

does it sound like a 747 about to crash in your house? if so you might as well through your washer away because you have a bad bearing and the cost to repair that is about the same for a new one. let me know if this helps

Maytag washer MAH 5500bww seems to run OK, but it does not pump out all the water(pumps out some) at the end of the cycles, churns remaining water during spin

Open the rear panel and remove the drain pump and clean it.
If there is nothing in the pump, check the drain motor for 18 ohms with a volt/ohm meter.
Not 18 ohms, replace the motor.

Agitator doesn't turn

Take the top off the agitator, pull the cover out, there should be a bolt to unscrew, after this os off take off the top and you will probably need some agitator dogs.

Will not spin to rinse and makes a churning noise/clogged drain for softener?

When my washer did that, they came out and put in a new pump etc, and it did it again within a few months. What fixes mine, at least for the 2 years I had only that problem, was to unplug and replug the wires that go into the motor board (that'sthe one under the wash tub, not the one behind the dials. Then it would be fixed for a month or two. The wire harness (and I never pinpointed exactly which one, just did them all) would come a little lose. I took the front part off the washer so that I have constant access to that part. This last time when it did it, tho, this did not fix the problem. Instead, it seems that my wax motor for the door lock had failed, and I cooked R11. As a temporary fix, I cut the R11 out of the control board (the one behind the dials), and inserted a popsicle stick into the microswitch further from the wax motor, so the door thinks it is locked and it will spin. This results in the washer not shutting down at the end of the cycle on its own (thinks the door is still locked) so you have to manually turn it off. Since I already had the front off the machine, I just had to undo the screws to the left and right at the top to raise the top of the machine to insert my popsicle stick. It is a lovely machine, isn't it? I have the MAH3000 also.
