Question about Plumbing
The pump is a pentax Cam 50/00 domestic water pump half horse power. It is connected to the house via 3/4" pipe. The source supply is a 1000gl tank The pump uses a smart head How do I prime this unit? Is the smart head damaged? I went out for a few hours and when I returned the water pressure in the taps was very low so I went to turn on the pump but the switch was allready on. I went to the unit and press the red reset button. which I usually do if it shuts off for what ever reason. this is when I saw the leak in the smart head housing.

Look for a place in the pipe from the pump to the house where an air pocket could form. That will fool the pump.

if the pump is working correctly, it can either be, need more water to prime it, or something in the well, such as low water, plugged filter, etc....sometimes when you have a system that is intermittently used, it can take 20 or 30 minutes of continuous priming to get it to pull, enough water to maintain the prime.

Sounds like the bladder is gone or inproper air pressure in water storage tank.
Bladder goes bad check it out with step 1
One way to check for sure with everything hooked up. The air valve on top of the tank if pressed you will get water out of the valve which should be only air. This will let you know it should replaced.
If Tank bladder is low in air and not water coming out.
2-If it checks ok put an air gauge to tank to check the air pressure, with a standard 40 gal tank you will have 28 psi of air in tank for it to function properly.

a number of possibilities
like insufficient pressure in the bell
or pressure leak 'or pump motor dying
but i'd be looking at a warranty claim
