Overheating When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermal overload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is the problem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are clogged with dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make sure the vents are clear and dust free. Use a small brush and can of compressed air to do this.

SOURCE: Macbook - screen white/blank after turning on

Sounds like it could be a corrupted OS; have you tried forcing it to start up with the OS disk, holding down the 'C' key? That's the first place to start...

If it won't start up like that, you probably have a hardware problem. (You can get excellent troubleshooting guidance at: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/ ) depending on your level of geekness, and assuming the warranty is expired?

Good luck

Just before it tries to start windows, go to safe mode, press F8 and select safe mode, you may need an external keyboard. That will enable you to restore the faulty/damaged files.

How to restore factory default

Toshiba laptops from mid-2007 onwards don't have a recovery disc supplied with the laptop. Instead, Toshiba has added a hidden partition on the hard drive which contains the same files as a recovery CD/DVD.
WARNING: All data and added programs will be deleted with this procedure. This procedure puts your laptop back to it's initial "out-of-box" factory settings. Make sure you save any critical data onto another device (CD, Flashdrive, External Harddisk, etc) before performing this procedure.

To restore your laptop to its factory settings using the hidden partition:

  1. Hold down the power button for ten seconds to switch off your machin. Please note that holding down the power button on the machine forces it to switch off. Any unsaved data will be lost.
  2. Press and hold the zero key and at the same time, tap the power button once to power on your notebook
  3. When the machine starts beeping, release the zero key
  4. When prompted by the warning screen, select Yes to continue with the system recovery 5) Select Recovery of Factory Default Software and click Next
  5. Select Recover to out-of-box state and click Next again
  6. Click Next to Start the recovery

How do i restore my wife's labtop back to the factory settings and erase everything. I've tried a lot. I'm lost now.

Most laptops come with a "rescue disk", or let you create one. Boot off the rescue disk. It will wipe everything, and return the system to the way it was when you first got it.

System restore factory settings no cd

Toshiba has built in system recovery partition in your hard drive

Make sure to back up important files in your Laptop to usb or portable hard disk before doing this.

Warning: In using System Recovery you files will be deleted, your laptop will be back to its factory settings

To access the Toshiba recovery partition, power off the laptop. Hold down the 0 (zero) key and turn the laptop on. Keep holding down the zero key until the TOSHIBA logo appears, where you should start tapping the zero key repeatedly. Stop if the unit beeps or when the TOSHIBA logo disappears. The screen should flash ** HDD RECOVERY MODE ** for a split second, then load the Toshiba recovery program right from the hard drive.

How to restore a toshiba L305-S5960 computer

For the Satellite model you will need to get the restore disks from Toshiba. There is one option that you can try but I doubt that it will work without using the disks. Its not going to harm your computer any if you try it and it doesnt work, I know on certain models of Toshiba this works, however with the Satellite's I believe the only option is the restore disks. Here is how to do it
Take your battery out of the bottom of your laptop, plug in with no battery, once you are plugged in, make sure your laptop is off. Hold down the zero key that is at the top, not the number kay pad but the top zero. While you are continuing to hold the 0 down power on the laptop, do not release the 0 until you see it boot up. If it takes, you will then see the option to restore. It may boot straight into windows or give you a keyboard error, if this is the case you will need to call toshiba and order the disks, they are 4.99 I believe. Hope this helps!

Hi,

Holding zero is the method for restoring Toshiba computers. Sony Vaio should use F10. From there you can do a full system restore to factory defaults.

Hope that helps :)
