Question about Hotpoint RVM1635 Microwave Oven
My microwave oven stopped heating. At first it made a louder and higher pitch than usual buzz for a second or two then stopped heating entirely after that. I found a service manual online and tested the capacitor ( with a capacitance meter), ohm'd out the magnetron, Hi voltage transformer, and relays/switches. I wasn't sure about the hi voltage diode since I only have a DMM and it read open in both directions. I purchased a new diode and at first it seemed promising as I could hear the normal buzz when the magnetron activated. However, the glass of water inside during my test did not heat at all. The magnetron felt slightly warm after the test and it does appear to be doing something ( just not heating). According to the service manual, it appears that I have ruled out just about everything but I suspect the mag is malfunctioning. Any suggestions? I have found a reasonably priced magnetron on eBay. Should I purchase it?
I would suspect the magnetron as well. But take that HV Diode somewhere. It's the cheapest part! (A local TV shop may have a low ohm meter to check it out with as well as an appliance shop)Here is what I tell people on replacement. If the cost of the replacement part(s) PLUS labor time costs exceed 50% of the cost of the unit, get a new unit. It holds true with all our "throw away electronics. A shame too. On the question regarding the Ebay purchase, personally, I would never trust a part sold on Ebay as a "New" fresh off the shelf part. They are usually New, stale off the shelf, perhaps dropped a few times, scratch and ding parts. In electronic components, that usually does not phase them. Larger electronic devices like magnatrons, it may. Shop smart. Find appliance part dealers near you first. Once something electronic is sold on Ebay, it's yours, wether it works or not. Especially if it's imported.
