Is there an o ring for the filter top?

The pump is leaking water out of the top of the pump with the filter in it. Should there be an O-ring in the top?

SOURCE: I cannot get the pump to pump water, motor still works.

Sounds like air has gotten into the pump and froze the pump. It will need to be replaced due to that reason. You can get a repair kit for the pump but it will not be gaurenteed to work

SOURCE: My model 603 filter pump leaks at the top under cap

It could be the o-ring on this model. There is a seal on these pool filters that looks like a rubber ring inside the lid. You might need to replace this ring if your pump is leaking here.

SOURCE: After priming my filter, the

Somewhere in your connections you have an air leak on the suction side. That is the sole reason that you have air bubbles in the strainer. If you have a leak on the suction side the only way you will see it is by adding water to the strainer basket and then checking for wet spots on the suction line. There can be a break a long way from the pump in the ground that you can not see.
Another way of troubleshooting is to remove the pump output line and install a cap with an air valve stem then block the suction line with an expandable plug. Then add regluated air at 10 PSI or less to the air valve and listen for a hiss in the line or the sound of water gurgle / bubble underground. I hate to say add any kind of dye (food coloring) but by doing so the leak would be visble. Problem with doing that is it would get introduced into your water once repairs were complete unless you have a way of bypassing the output overboard. If you can overboard the food coloring by all means add it to the filter basket with a full load of water. You will find the leak.
I suspect you have a leak near your recent pump replacement. However...... this thought comes to mind. Did the old pump fail from losing prime? If it did... you must find the leak in the suction line.

Your on the right track with noting the bubbles in the strainer box. You have little choice but to locate the source of the suction leak. You will not see a leak during pump operation because it would be drawing air and water under a vacuum. The only way to find the leak is to pressurize the line as I stated above. Cap the output line, install a way to use compressed air and then add air at low pressure listening for the leak. The drain / suction source must also be blocked with an expandable plug!

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

remove the O ring and clean it as well as the top and bottom housing. use an approved lube to treat the O ring (not vaseline). while applying lube, look for checks or cracks in the O ring. it doesnt take much for a leak.
when you are putting unit together, make sure the air release valve is open

Water squirts out of where you tighten top to filer holder

If I understand you correctly, water is leaking out of where the two halves connect? I will assume, this filter has some age to it and the housing may show signs of warpage. A quick fix is to use grease to help the o-ring to seal. Liberally apply grease all the way around the o-ring and then try sealing the housing.

Water leaks out the top of the filter housing. I ordered "o" ring 10266 (filter housing "o" ring) and it is too larger. Where can I find a schematic with part numbers.

Air only gets into the lines of your equipment if it enters somewhere on the suction side of the system. That means from the pump housing and strainer BACK to the pool on the inlets. Once the water passes from the impeller out the discharge of the pump it is under pressure and any leaks will result in water escaping from the line.

While your filter may or may not need work air is likely the result of failing gaskets or a seal in the pump. Replace the strainer lid ring, the pump body ring and the mechanical seal first. If there is still air look at the valve or valves in front of the pump for controlling inlet water flow...check for leaking stems or failing pipe joints.

Water surging back to pool when shut off

sounds like you have air built up inside the filter when the pump shuts off. the most likely cause is a suction side air leak, bad lid o-ring or union o-ring or maybe even the threaded fitting going into the pump. When you turn the pump off, you may be able to see water squirting out wherever the leak is. Once you find/fix the suction side leak the filter should stay filled with water and not surge backwards when the pump turns off. Make sure you keep the filter clean as well.
