Question about Whirlpool MH1140XM Microwave Oven

Open Question

I have a Whirlpool MH1140XMB-2, the low voltage side works fine, clock, button, etc. When I start the microwave, smoke will bellow out of the top after it has ran for one minute and it smells like a burnt component. I placed butter in the microwave to see if it would heat up, it did not, what do you think could be the problem? As I don't want to replace the microwave over a ten to thirty dollar part?

SOURCE: After changing a blown oven light, the clock works but nothing else turns on, including the fan, light, microwave

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Details of our service and critical safety information and disassembly information is at our site, linked here on Fixya:

The lights fan can be inoperable or stuck on or no bright, too. Sometimes this will similarly affect the exhaust fan operation, too.

SOURCE: Whirlpool MH1140XMB-2 mic won't start

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch or a loose door switch mount, which are pretty simple problems to fix.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside.

Door switch or mount trouble is usually caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimes it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. This tab can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

If the switch mount is broken, it's usually more economical and safer to add a dab or two of hot glue to the mount to secure the switch. Let it cool for about 30 minutes before using.

One test that sometimes helps is to gently lift up (and/or push down) on the door or handle as you try to start it. If it works or tries to work, then it's a door switch mount or door alignment issue.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, & testing.

our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

If you only need a switch, you can order a universal type here for $5 postpaid.

If you've recently had trouble with your cooktop lights, one may have shorted, causing a problem on your control circuit board, which we regularly repair for $39.95 in about a week or so with a one-year guarantee.

SOURCE: Microwave had burnt electrical smell a few minutes

The electrical burning smell will be the Hi-Voltagetransformer inside the microwave. Along with the transformer you will also needto replace the capacitor. It couldbe a leaking high voltage cable (electric arching) bad insulator, if it's moreof an electronic component burning smell, it could be an overheating component,in both cases you should have it checked by a professional technician.Hope this will help you. Good Luck.

My Whirlpool microwave model MH6130XEB-1 made a pop noise and now will no longer heat food. Everything else works fine, clock, timer, fan, turn table, etc. Is this a fuse problem?

It can be the fuse supplying the magnetron, or the magnetron itself which has failed. Another suspect is the high voltage capacitor in this circuit.

Don't try to fix this yourself as the internals of a microwave are dangerous, with high voltages even when unplugged.

My microwave oven stopped working. No lights, clocks etc. I have checked the outlet and it is fine, power available. Is there a fuse somewhere inside the microwave?

There is a main fuse in the microwave oven, "white body with silver ends" located near the high voltage capacitor. Unplug unit take top off and allow 30 seconds to dis-charge. Keep in mind the door switch becomes defective and often blows the fuse.

Whirlpool gh5184xps over-the-counter microwave no power

There is a high voltage fuse in the unit attatched to the high voltage capacitor, it is the most common problem for microwaves not working. Also check the protective diode, the high voltage capacitor as well as the transformer if the fuse is ok. Good Luck.

Our MH7130eq microwave will not start after pushing the start button on The clock, timer, hood fan works, however the micro will not start

Check the door safety switches . remove the cover ... look on the right side near the top. Just because they sound like they are working doesnt mean they are working. Sheck them with an ohm meter or other contunity tester.

Door switches are the most common reason for microwave failure.

Complete functioning control panel but nothing works.

This is a problem with the control panel assembly, which we repair nationwide for $32.50 postpaid. Sometimes the bulbs short when they fail, and that damages the control board. This also can happen when bulbs are removed or installed without first unlugging the oven or turning off the breaker.
