Its most likely the rear seal is out [bad] on the engine causing leakage.

Smoke coming from bell housing

Clutch or automatic? The rear engine crank seal is most likely leaking. Oil on the clutch will ruin it completely, even the metal parts, so replace the whole thing. If it's an automatic, the oil is dripping on the flywheel which gets hot normally. No damage . Use a solvent to clean the oil from inside the bell housing after you replace the seal.

I have a 1993 polaris 350l. I found oil in my starter when cleaning it because the bench test failed. Why and where is the oil coming from?

the starter is open at the pinion end inside the bell housing so the oil can come from a leaking rear main seal on the crankshaft or from the transmission front seal. Because fluids are thrown out from a spinning surface then any oil in the bell housing will be flung out and if the starter pinion opening is facing upwards or slightly upwards then the oil will eventually find it's way into the starter

I have a 2003 Dodge Neon se there's a major oil leak between the engine and transmission how do I fix this

Check that the oil leak is not engine oil coming out before the bell housing ( sump gasket) If the oil is coming out of the bell housing inspection cover then it means box put and either flywheel off for a rear main seal or torque converter out for a seal in the box or converter.. If it is a sump or rear main seal check the engine oil level first and the PCV valve operation as excessive oil level and sump pressure will cause the engine side problems that you can fix without removing the box.

Isn't there just a tapered bolt that tightens into the bell housing & down into the starter housing, if I recall correctly.

When the unit shuts down it blows about a quart of compressor oil out the bell housing. The shut down blead off sysrem doesn't appear to be working.

See if you can bleed the compressed air from the tank.Don,t forget to put oil to the motor.Start the machine for a few minutes. If still bleeding oil you need to overhaul the bell housing with new gaskets.I recommend to do the overhaul first but the test will troubleshoot both bleeders.

Won't pull itself up hill

You didn't indicate what model of tractor you have but most likely it is a hydrostatic drive problem . The power is transfered from the engine to the wheels by hydraulic pressure. If the fluid level (hydraulic oil) is low then it won't drive correctly. Follow the owners manual to check the fluid level. The other possibility is if this is an older unit it could actually have water in the oil.The water will not operate correctly. Where did the water come from? The transmission housing, is vented to atmosphere. On a hot humid day, while you're driving, the fluid and housing is heated. When the tractor cools, the ambient humid air enters the housing. When night rolls aroound the water condensing inside the housing. If you're lucky this transaxle may have a drain plug in the bottom. You can remove this and see if the oil looks milky. If it does, I'd drain it all and refill with fresh oil.
