Xps m1210 won't start

The power light runs for a few seconds and shuts down. Do I need a new motherboard?

I removed the battery and tried to use just the power adapter, same problem. I didn't try a new battery.... would that make a differnce?

  • candbj Mar 12, 2009

After googling my problem I read to press and hold the power and fn keys to check motherboard. When I do that, I get green lights on the num lock, cap lock, etc. Don't know what that means, but the article indicated motherboard failure if those light up. I'd think there is power to the laptop from the power adapter if i get those green lights.

I'll also try a different power adapter and try to find a battery to see if it's the battery.

    Thanks for the help!!!

Before getting to that point are you sure your battery and power adapter are functioning properly? You may want to try each seperately and see if you get a response.

Well a new battery could help, but it could also be the jack where you plug your adapter in. Often times it needs to be replaced. A new battery will only work until it runs down and then will not be able to be recharged if in fact the jack on the laptop is bad. You could start with the battery. A battery ideally only lasts about a year depending on how often you use your computer, and should be removed while you are using the power supply.

I have a Dell XPS M1530 laptop and a few days ago I replaced the cmos battery and it worked; now it won´t but up. it started shutting down, now fan runs for 2 seconds lights come up but no display and...

Is it charging? If it isn't then try a different charger but reopen it and clean it with a soft brush and try again otherwise it looks like you've a PSU fault there and you have either disconnected or caused static damage to the system.

I have a Dell XPS M1210 laptop for which I have just purchased a new 9-cell compatible battery. It worked great for a couple of hours, but now shuts off immediately when unplugged from the AC power supply....

You might want to try what I did when I had a completely discharged battery for my Dell Laptop. I attached the battery to the computer, make sure the computer is off and plug in the charger for a full twenty four hours (undisturbed). And this really worked. I had no problems with the battery. Good luck.

Dell xps m1210 won't power up with new battery. Check notes.

If it is working fine with a fresh battery then it is not a motherboard problem. It is either a bad ac adapter jack on the motherboard or the actual ac adapter cord is not working. Try cables2go.com as they have replacement ac adapters for almost everything under the sun. Hope this helps.

Black screen Dell laptop xps vista

Hi,
the symptom more or less feels like there is a video driver problem on the laptop. I would like you to shut down the sytem ,disconnect the Ac adapter and remove the battery from the system. press the power button for 10 seconds .
Reinsert the battery and connect the Ac adapter.
Press the Fn + Power button , to run the diagnostics.
Do post back if you see colored lines on the screen ..so that i can give you more help

Thanks

Xps m1210 is dead and no power even with a new ac adapter

The M1210 suffers from the same die packaging problem with its Nvidia GeForce Go7400 chip as many dell laptops do. However dell does not admit this, and has only extended the warranties for recently manufactured laptops.

To get Dell to fix your laptop, despite it not being covered by the extended warranty, follow the instructions I have posted here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=4611553#post4611553

Dell is trying to cover up a critical flaw in what is supposed to be a high performance gaming laptop. It is my goal to make Dell come clean about this issue. Lets all let them know that they cannot get away with screwing over their customers like this.

Wet Dell XPS M1210

I would try cleaning the terminals on the battery and the computer with an old toothbrush and simple green or other multi-purpose cleaner, that doesn't leave residue.
