Most times, you can plug the drive into a USB port and Windows will detect the device and assign a drive letter to it. If it does, the CD burning software should then be able to see it. Try googling the burner company name and model number if Windows continues seeing the drive as an unknown device.

You can add an internal or external CD or DVD burner. They can be IDE, Sata, or USB. They are not expensive or hard to install.

Tip

Recovering your data before reinstall with ubuntu.

If you have lost your password, or if you are unable to start up windows and it seems like you would have to do a fresh install of windows.

In the process you may lose all your files, if the drive is formatted, to avoid that happening download ubuntu and burn it to a cd.

things needed:
  • A working computer w/ cd burning capability
  • 1 empty CD-R disk
  • External hard drive (USB) for backing up your files.
download ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/ and burn it to a cd, then start up from the disc and back up your files into the external usb drive. The downloading and burning of the disc, the ubuntu site explains and has everything you need for this task.

Start your machine with the cd, and connect the usb hard drive. if the machine does not start from the cd, confirm that the disc works on another computer and make sure its clean, then check the boot order by following my tip on troubleshooting boot cd issues.

with the cd in the drive and it starts up, take the option to Try ubuntu without any change to your computer.

In ubuntu, it is quite like a windows system, its as simple to use as windows is.

In ubuntu, with the external usb drive connected, on the desktop

On the top right you have places, from there you can get into your computers hard drive and then on the usb drive, just copy your files from there to the external just like you would do with a windows computer.

Things that you want to back up

documents and settings your user name --- this place contains your personal data in most cases

any other place that you know contains something important.

that is the most important place and that is where most of the files are stored, of course you will know better what and where they are.

Things that you don't want to back up

program files, contains the installed programs of your computer, most of the time it is not a good idea to back up these files as programs need to be reinstalled when a new install of windows is made, since we are not backing up registry entries for the programs they may not work properly.

windows, contains the windows installation very rarely would you have anything important there, ignore it

temp, contains temporary files, unless you stored something important there ignore it.

If you kept something important in the recycle bin you can possibly find a hidden folder of recycler or similar in the drive where you may find some of your files, do not store your content in the recycle bin, it is not a good idea to store anything there.

When you have backed up your files you can do a fresh install of windows, for help in that please see my tips and tricks section for more guidance.

Need to install cd but my laptop has no cd romm

You can either get an external optical drive (USB is the most common) or check if the files are available at a web site. (For hardware drivers, often it is easier to get the drivers by going to the manufacturer's site and downloading the files via your internet connection. However, you will not get any third-pary software with the download.)

Prices for external drives range from $25 up depending on the type of drive. Some use external power adapters; others are powered by the USB itself (usually takes two USB ports). Some are read-only drives; others are burners. For a variety of models, see http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=Property&Subcategory=420&Description=&Type=&N=100007595&IsNodeId=1&srchInDesc=&MinPrice=&MaxPrice= .

I hope this helps.

Cindy Wells
(there are also USB to IDE/SATA drive adapters that can make an internal optical drive into an external drive for a temporary solution if you have a spare drive.)

I have an emprex g40 webcam and windows vista. I cannot get it to work. I have installed the cd, plugged in the camera, and installed the driver. I can see a very poor pix of myself on my desktop, but...

Your version of windows and the driver that you install has to match each other. The CD may not contain the corrct driver. Look at your EMPREX support website below and download and install the driver that matches you windows or other version. If a driver is not available for you version then your camera wil not work with you computers OS.

if both are malfunctioning it indicates an application error. Uninstall then defrag and cleanup your harddisk from system tools, then re-install your burning softeware. If your O/S is an old installation it might be time to try a fresh install. Also, I would clean both drive lenses with isopropyl and cotton buds just to make sure that is not the issue. My feeling is that you need to reinstall your O/S(windows)

Okay, lets first solve your DVD problem. First of all do you have a DVD burner? If so read on. Next is the burner an internal burner or external burner? If it is an internal burner contact the company for the drivers. If it is an external device see if it came with a CD. If it did install it, if not Add the hardware to your computer with the add hardware wizard. If you need instructions just tell me.

Dear Kayty -

Unfortunately, the "slot" cdrom drives are not intended for use with the mini CDs. However, there are a few options; Cheapest and easiest would be to go to the Digital Photo Frame manufacturer's web site and download the software - more often than not, all of the necessary drivers and utilities can just be downloaded and installed from the net.

Otherwise, you might consider purchasing an external cdrom drive, generally costing between 30 and 60 bucks new, that would connect to your computer via USB cable. Maybe you've considered buying a CD or DVD Burner for your computer? Either one would work for installing the software from a mini-cd.

Here's a link to an external CDRW drive on ebay to give ya an idea:

It doesn't seem as if the company that made your webcam has drivers for Windows Vista. You should consider getting a new webcam.

How do I transfer files from Windows 98se to Vista on my new computer

If you have a CD/DVD writer, you can write the files to a CD-R. If this is not an option, take out the HDD from he Win 98se machine and install it in the vista machine, if you have room. you might need to disconnect your CD/DVD drive in your vista machine to free up the EIDE ribbon cable.

option 3:
Win 98se can do USB, but not very well. And drivers are hard to come by for usb flash drives. Vista/XP/ win 2000 can handle them without needing a driver disk. Therefore you will need a new OS for the win 98se machine. How about linux, it can handle usb flash drives very well. My advice use Ubuntu linux, you don't need to install it, just get a boot CD. it boots the OS from the CD, does not install or format anything. Use that OS to copy the necessary files to the flash drive. This option requires you to have a cd burner or access to one, so not really saving any time.

http://www.ubuntu.com/

You did not give ne a lot of information about your setup. Like do you have a cd/dvd burner, any usb ports, any spare HDD, any external media storage. Do you have any burning software like nero. So pick which option that is viable.

You can also take your computer to best buy and have them back up the data on a CD/DVD disc for a price. Best Buy is not the only shop that does this type of service, check in your area.
