Craftsman Kohler 26 hp starts and runs for 10 seconds with starting fluid sprayed in the carbureator then stops. How do I keep it running

first you need to see if you have fuel going to the carb then you need to see if it is going threw the carb there is a solenoid on the bottom of the carb that shuts fuel off to the jet if you have no power to the solenoid that will keep it from running also dirty old fuel sitting in the carb will cause the carb rto stick closed so if you have power to it remove it and see if it is opening

try taking stater fluid to carb and try keeping it running, needle seat might have some dirt in it or the carb itself needs to be cleaned.

Craftsman lawn mower can not run without pumping the red button

Hello,

The fact you need to keep pushing the RED or "Primer" button says that your engine is running too lean ie. not getting enough gas.

You probably have a carburator problem due to the old gas gumming up the inside of the carb. The gum and dirt is clogging some of the internal passages of the carburator. It will need to removed from the engine and cleaned. The carburator is held to the engine by 2 bolts and is simple inside. Carefully clean the carb. with either carb. cleaner or laquer thinner or similar good solvant. Reinstall and you should be fine.

Also be sure to check your air filter and replace if dirty.
The red button is a "primer" that pumps extra gas into the engine. It is normally used only only for statrup so if need to use it while the engine's running, you're running too lean.

Have a qualified mechanic rebuild your original carburator and reinstall it with all the original vaccum hoses and controls functioning properly.

Someone smarter than you and I, designed this engine to function properly with the feedback carburator. Installing an aftermarket carb negates the entire emision control system and will not allow the engine to "Breathe" properly.
