Here is all the information I have , my neighbor gave me the saw when he moved down to Vegas a couple years back.So I can use any information you can give me ,including how you set the chain tension . it is a Craftsman 16" ,Model #358.355162 ,ser. # 94230H0Z857. Thanks John

I will need some more information to help you with this. Give me all the numbers you can find on the saw (model, serial, saw name & number, etc.) and I am sure I can help you with this problem. My first guess is that your carb is not set right and you need to turn up the idle. let me know and I will help. thanks,

Craftsman 18" chain saw 42cc. Starts and runs fine. Will not idle after running for a while. Will not restart when hot. Will start after the saw cools down.

I had a 2 cycle snow thrower that acted similarly. It needed a new diaphragm. When they get old they act up. I could never see a physical difference between the good and bad one but the new one fixed it. It's a flat rubber part that is in the carburetor. Call Sears parts or visit them on-line to get a parts breakdown of the carb.

Saw wont idle, runs wide open

Some saws have a throttle lock that locks the trigger to aid starting. Get a look at the carb to see if it opens when the trigger is pressed and closes when the trigger is released. If it stays open the lock may not be releasing or the throttle linkage is bound up or disconnected from the carb.

I have a 46 cc with an 18" bar. The first few times I used the saw it worked fine. Now I am up to the 5th use and once started the blade spins and the saw runs as if you are giving it full gas. ...

If this is a new saw and you have only used it a few time it may still be under warranty. Saw sometimes carry up to 1 year warranty on some applications(what you use it for-home-owner or commercial). If the saw is out of warranty it sounds like you have a problem with the rod alignment (actually it's a stiff wire) but it seems that it may be holding the throttle valve open. Check the trigger action to see if is actually smooth and not binding. When you squeeze and release the trigger the saw should stop. If it does not you must find where it is binding. Look under the carburetor and check the action there. Squeeze and release that trigger until you see something either binding or out of the ordinary in the action. When you release the trigger the saw should stop. Have fun. Then get back to work!

Won't idle, cranks and runs fine as long as trigger is depressed

Could be just a carb adjustment required, the L screw on the carb will richen up the mixture, if increaseing the the idle screw does not help, try extra 1/4 turn out on the L screw, make sure the air filter is clean before makeing any adjustments.

The McCulloch chain saw will run on high speed but will not idle once the trigger is released.

See if the saw has a low speed mixture screw and try turning it out a quarter turn.

Idles fine, shuts down when release brake.

It could be the brake switch bad, if this model came with one. When it is depressed it will start, but when it is released it may not be switching to stay running.

How do I start rental model 96.

Place the saw on full choke with the switch on. Pull the rope until it fires. Place the saw on half choke, and pull again, and it will start running. Half choke should release as soon as you hit the trigger.
