Frost on the back wall of the freezer, refridgerator not all that

Alright, I ended up paying someone to fix this, and just about anyone can do it. Pull EVERYTHING out of the freezer, there are two quater inch sheetmetal screws that hold the back panel on that has frost on it. Remove them and the back panel. WOW LOOK AT ALL THE PRETTY ICE! Grab a hair dryer and go to work, thaw it all out and have a towel or shop vac handy, Mamas floor is gonna get wet. Turns out there is a defrost heater here that keeps the coils free from frost, kit number WR23X10467, in my case HSSGFT. If you have to order it, you can throw it back together and it should run for another week before it freezes up again, hopefully your parts will be in by then, just don't loose your hair dryer!

Ok I see after 30+ years someone gets it. Beware though other things besides the heaters can cause the same simptom. Sometimes things are not as simple as they seem. And the question begs to be asked "Do you know if there isa reason other than defective heater that caused the heater to "burn" out? Like there may be a heater safety switch that should considr rteplacing as well, if it isnt working properly the heater will saty in too long and burn out your  new one prematurly.

It is possible that the evaporator coils are not defrosting. Check to see if there is frost buildup on the back wall of the freezer. With GE's the defrost element is usually what causes them to not defrost and you can probably get it fixed for about $150 to $200 depending on who you use. Most appliance company's have a diognostic charge that runs anywhere from $40 to $80 to estimate how much it would cost to fix it. If you do have frost buildup you can unplug it and let the frost melt, and this will give you about a week before it stops cooling again. Hope this helps

Frezeeer works fine. Refridgerator (top) does not

good morning,
with this unit there are two issues that could be cusing this...
check to make sure you can hear the fan in the freezer,
2nd check your back wall for frost, sometimes this model ices up in the air chanels, to know for sure you will have to remove both the walls and the back wall, it takes a lil time but it can be done with only a screwdriver,
once you get the back wall off look up in the corners, of the freezer, it there is frost or ice blocks , remove those and reassemble you should be ok
make sure the drawer is closing properly

Fridge not getting cold enough

The cold from the freezer is piped up to the refrigerator and if that tube gets clogged with frost or ice it will not be able to blow to the cold air into the refrigerator area. I took everything out, unpluged the unit for about 6 hours, till all the frost from the freezer was gone, wiped up all moisture and turn it back on. It worked!

Frost in freezer and no cooling in refridgerator

Hi: When this happens it means that there is frost built up in the back of the refrigerator. You are having an issue with the defrost heater or the defrost timer. There is an off chance the refrigerator's freezer is over packed with food and there is no circulation. If you're handy empty the fridge and take a hair dryer to the back wall to melt away the frost from behind. You will have to remove the back metal wall. Look at the heater. It will be at the bottom of the freezer behind the back wall. A glass tube with a wire coil running through it. If the coil is broken, replace it. If not you will be looking at a defrost timer. Sometimes on a circuit board. If nothing else defrosting the back of the freezer will make the ref work another week or two. Searspartsdirect will have the parts and schematics. I hope this helps, Jeff

Fridge side not working freezer frost on back at first now not freezing hardly at all

If you still have the frost build up on the back wall of the freezer, your problem is in the defrost circuit. You'll find a bad heater, terminator or control.

Also verify operation of the evaporator (freezer) fan.
