I recently had this problem with my combination CD / DVD player: would play cd's just fine but wouldn't recognize or play DVD's. There are a few potential things that could cause this problem: bad dvd mechanism, bad laser, bad wiring/circuits. There was a part called "DVD mechanism" on my unit (Onkyo DV-CP706) that was bad. That seems to be a common failure on Onkyo DVD players, at least judging from these help forums. It may be a common failure for DVD players in general. The part cost me $50, and labor was $100. For my unit, not under warranty anymore, it was still worth it to have it fixed rather than buy a new one. If you just have a cheapie $50 DVD player it's probably not worth it to have it fixed. Otherwise, take it to an authorized repair center for your particular brand and it will probably come back to you in better shape than when you bought it new. That, and you'll help save the environment by not dumping another piece of home electronics in the landfill. :)

SOURCE: when i insert a disc in my dvd player it reads "no

Hi mgarragh1,
If you have necessary tools and test instruments, know safety precaution in basic troubleshooting try the steps below to solve your problem.
Assuming that the disc is good.
1.Clean the lens. - Sometimes because of dust the lens can't read any disc. Try clean the lens by soft cotton buds. Be careful while doing this.
2.Replace the ribbon - Check the ribbon connected to the lens from the main board for scratch, damage. Once it has an open line then of course the lens can't read the disc. Also try to erase the contact by pencil eraser. If you've done the steps above and the symptoms still there then the next step requires you a little knowledge in soldering technique and reading the ohmmeter.
3.Check the motor - Check the motor that spin the disc with an ohmmeter. You can test it using the ohmmeter (x1) even it is connected on the lens assembly.Good motor - reading should be fairly high and it will spin. Bad motor- reading will drop to low resistance and will not spin.
Hint : 50% of my repaired unit the above parts are commonly caused of the problem.
If you confirmed that you have a defective motor then replace it with a new one. Before replacing the new motor you have to check the clearance of the disc holder with the old one. The clearance should be the same as the old because if not the lens will not read the disc if it is too far or too close.

Ifyou already cleaned the lens, and confirmed that the ribbon is good as well as the motor then I would advice you to send it to repair shop because the next step should be done with an expert because it is quite technical diagnosing the fault between the pick-up lens and the main board.
Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!
Thanks for using Fixya.

The problem is in the laser pickup assembly, over time laser becomes weak until it can no longer read the disc. Buy a CD cleaning kit and follow the instructions, if no change! cheaper to replace the player.

Clean the laser pickup lens by insert a lens cleaning disc into the set, and play it at least three times. If it does not help you. replace the laser pickup unit, with same type and number. OK.

The display says, "insert disc",

Thank you for posting to Fixya.com and it is my pleasure to guide you.

1. The disc may be turned over. Insert the disc with the playback side facing down.

2. The disc may be dirty. Wipe it with the correct type rag.

Since you stated the display is showing then I take it the player is on and the chord is plugged in.

3. Is the disc completely centered in the tray? I have done that before.

4. Have you run the self-diagnosis function? If the Error code 'AACS ERR' shows then it is an "AACS read failure". Remove the protected disc. Then turn the unit off and wait a minute or two and back on.

Good luck and please post back that you are successful and give thumbs up if my solution has worked for you. If I can be more helpful just reply.

Hello
Either your DVD players Laser Pickup Unit is dirty or defective or its 'sled' motor has damaged. Sled motor is one, which spins the disc inside. if it does not spins, the main system IC won't get any signal that the disc is "IN", and will show the messege "No Disc". The same will happen if the laser pickup unit is defective or dirty. Insert a Head Cleaning Disc into the system, and play it for atleast 3 times. If there is any dirt or dust, this will solve your DVD's problem. If not, it should be serviced by any skilled technician. It is not a user reparable item, as you have to take out its loading mechanism completly out of it for repair. OK.
