Win98 is installed on machine but I cannot use Windows Explorer. The devices seem to work (CD-ROM, 3COM PCMCIA card). Most times the system chokes when I try to navigate with the mouse. What I would like to do is get the machine 'operational' (ie not constantly crashing, load Word and install a USB port to gain some wireless connectivity. If it is not possible for under $100, then I'll just look for another used machine.
Thanksbeforehand for any assistance you can provide:-)

Click on Start, Run, and typeregedit and press Enter Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders
This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.
If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete
After deleting the keys, close the registry editor Reboot your computer Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.
message means there is no working operating system(OS) installed on the harddisk, like windows XP,vista or a lunix version. if you have a working cd-rom, i use a win 98 install cd that boots from startup then install win98 to find out if there are any hardware issues. if the invalid OS was a version that used the NTFS file system the drive will have to be re-formatted/erased to install win98. if you have a bootable cd-rom version of the OS you use or if the factory IBM restore partition is intact you can use them. they may not save any data you have on the drive. if you have data you need to retrive from the disk drive it is a different procedure.
Sir, It seems there is no Operating System(OS) installed in your laptop. Check is you have got any Operating System (eg : Windows XP, Vista, 7) CD/DVD provided to you. Or else, try to get it from any computer retailer shop or buy it from microsoft.com. If you have any such CD/DVD, Insert it in the CD/DVD ROM (drive). And press f10 key during the boot screen (the black screen) and choose " First Boot Device " as Cd/DVD ROM and it will appear as " Press any key to boot from cd", press any key and you will get through the Operating System Installation Screen. Follow the procedures, at one point you should format the partition (drive) where you choose to install that particular OS. And follow the procedures, enter all information it asks like product key (it will found on the OS CD/DVD package) and other registration information. Once you done wit all these, your laptop will work fine. Thank You.
you get a copy of windows 98, pop in the disc, click upgrade (or fresh install if you don't wanna keep anything), and let her install. About 45 minutes after it reboots you should check on it because it has a dialog box for you then.
I know you can't boot from the Windows 98 CD, and probably not from Windows 2000 either. It is possible to turn the the Windows 98 bootable floppy into a bootable CD, but I think you would be much better of trying to install Linux.
Well once you did a clean install over all of Dell drivers etc etc. You wiped out the restore artion that was on the computer. You have to go to Dells website and under the support tab look for the Nic card that you have inside the computer.

Try physically removing the player and fire up the laptop. Power down the laptop, replace the player and power back up. If that doesn't help, see if BIOS recognizes it. If that doesn't work, get back to me. Ron-
