Question about IBM ThinkPad 760 XL Notebook

Thinkpad 760XL OS upgrade from Win95 to Win98

Win98 is installed on machine but I cannot use Windows Explorer. The devices seem to work (CD-ROM, 3COM PCMCIA card). Most times the system chokes when I try to navigate with the mouse. What I would like to do is get the machine 'operational' (ie not constantly crashing, load Word and install a USB port to gain some wireless connectivity. If it is not possible for under $100, then I'll just look for another used machine.

Thanksbeforehand for any assistance you can provide:-)

machine was originally loaded with WIN95 (no cd). I just want to be sure that the hard drive isn't faulty. Thanks for the info; I'll try to install the WIN98 drivers; I don't think I can go back to WIN95 now...

Thanks to all for your timely help and suggestions.

If I can't add a USB port on this machine, I guess I'll use this as a practice machine to study for A+ exam.

    Enjoy the spring, b:-)

If this machine was working, can you do a system restore back to that time?
Do you have the Win98 disk that came with the computer? If so, you can do a windows reinstall/repair.
Win 98 is not really good with USB ports, but if you have drivers for one, it might work.

Enter the 7 digit product code . Find the drivers for Win 98 and install them.

I don't think you would want to go back to win 95. Not only is is an end of life product, but it doesn't support USB.

The CD -rom not compatible with windows 8. it works on windows 95

Between Win95 and Windows 8 there are several other versions Win 98, Win 2000, Win XP, Vista, and Windows 7. Try to run the CD in compatibility mode. If it does not work you will have to forgo the use of that software or run it on an old machine, or upgrade to a version compatible with Windows 8 if one such upgrade exists.

Need driver for win95

You won't be able to find that. Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 95 before this unit was popular. Only solution is to upgrade your OS... it's about time, you know.

I have an IBM ThinkPad 2861that displays "operating system not found" during start up. I downloaded a user manual that wasn't much help in solving the problem. Any advice?

message means there is no working operating system(OS) installed on the harddisk, like windows XP,vista or a lunix version. if you have a working cd-rom, i use a win 98 install cd that boots from startup then install win98 to find out if there are any hardware issues. if the invalid OS was a version that used the NTFS file system the drive will have to be re-formatted/erased to install win98. if you have a bootable cd-rom version of the OS you use or if the factory IBM restore partition is intact you can use them. they may not save any data you have on the drive. if you have data you need to retrive from the disk drive it is a different procedure.

How do i erase windows 95 and replace it with windows 98?

you get a copy of windows 98, pop in the disc, click upgrade (or fresh install if you don't wanna keep anything), and let her install. About 45 minutes after it reboots you should check on it because it has a dialog box for you then.

I recommend using another computer to get a cd-rom driver so you can download the drivers.

I also suggest changing boot up to cd rom first before hard-drive.
Then put cd in driver, then boot pc and it should recognize and load cd rom to install software.

NOT DETECTING CD ROM

Hi,

Although the BIOS in this old machine has a boot from cd option, it is quite possible the DVDrom drive simply doesn't support the feature. Many P2 machines were like that. Chances are you will need a bootable DOS/WIN95/WIN98 floopy which will allow you to get it running with a CD driver.

Once you have this accomplished you can simply use the command prompt with cd support boot option and use the command prompt to load the installer on the CD. Once it finishes it's initial setup it will be able to use the cd drive for everything BUT booting.

Hope this Helps FixYa,

Chris

I just upgrade my laptop also. The fix seems to be this Driver Wdm4148 you can finf it here http://rapidshare.com/files/4436678/Wdm4148.zip.html You have to open Device Manager select your sound device it should have a ? since it's not working. Select update driver don't go through the windows update and select Install from a specific location. Now browse and find where you downloaded the file. I recommend the desktop Open it until you see the internal Wdm4148 and install. You'll have to do it twice for some reason but it works :)

How to install os

This is a little difficult but it can B done :) Firstly I dunno if ya need to re-format ya drive? perhaps first ya could try to "Repair" of Win98? If that doesn't work, then, perhaps ya may have to re-format. If the Win98 is on a SEPARATE drive or Partition this also makes a difference.... Basically ... repair/re-install win98, then do a repair of ya Boot menu for XP, as Win98 sets up an incorrect Boot up for XP, and thus must be "Fixed" so XP will boot & show a Dual boot menu.. here are some links to help you step by step... http://pcworld.about.com/magazine/2109p156id111652.htm http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/ew/2004/08/30/stories/2004083000250400.htm
