Question about Apple iPod nano

IPod nano is dead

My less than one year old iPod just stopped working. is it trash, or can it be fixed?

Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.) Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step. Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.

If you are still unable to reset your iPod, use only one finger from one hand to press the Center (Select) button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Menu button.
When you reset iPod all your music and files are saved, but some customized settings may be lost. Date and time are preserved (unless the iPod reset itself because it had no power and then was reconnected to power). Other customized settings, such as Bookmarks, On-The-Go Playlists, Shuffle, Backlight timer, and so forth are preserved from the last time the hard drive turned on.

Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center.
If you are still unable to put your iPod with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button.

How to restore iPod (ARTICLE NUMBER HT1339)
Open iTunes, and then connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.

After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.
Select your iPod in the Source panel and you will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes windows.

Click the Restore button. You will be prompted with one or more restore options that may prompt iTunes to automatically download the latest iPod Software.

The 4 possible restore options are: Restore Option

1: Restore - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod. Restore Option

2: Use Same Version - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod even though a newer version is available. Restore Option

3: Use Newest Version - Restores with the latest iPod Software available. Restore Option

4: Restore and Update - Restores with the latest iPod Software available.

If you are using a Mac, a message will appear prompting you to enter an administrator’s name and password.

A progress bar will appear on the computer screen indicating that the first stage of the restore process has started.

When this stage is completed, iTunes will present one of two messages on screen with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
Restore Instruction 1: Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).


Restore Instruction 2: Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).

During the stage 2 of the restore process, the iPod will show an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remains connected to the computer or iPod Power adapter during this stage.

Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see since the backlight on the iPod display may be off.

After stage 2 of the restore process is complete and the iPod is connected to the computer, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear asking you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences similar to when you connected your iPod for the first time.

Can not restore ipod nano because it says it is busy. Have tried all the suggestions on the websites and chat rooms. Have old ipod nano and mac book with snow leapord


Unfortunately the Ipod may be beyond repair. Ipods are only built to last 3-5 years, and after said amount of time, they start to lose their ability to work. Your best bet is probably bringing it to an apple store, if they cant/wont fix it, then minimally you will get 10% off of the purchase of a new ipod.

My nano wont charge or display anything ever since the screen went white and displayed a triangle with unhappy face. what can i do to fix my poorly nano?


Maybe it's just having a bad day. Ipods can be cranky too!
But seriously, Try holding down the center button and the play button at the same time until a white apple appears.
If this doesnt work check your waranty. If it's less than a year old you should be good to go. Trade it in for a refurb - if it works better than what you have, you're good to go.
If it still doesn't work... the only thing I can suggest is to visit an Apple store.

Nano dead. Will not turn on. It was fully charged.


It's broken. Google "iPod repairs" in your country and they might be able to replace it. Otherwise you can get an exchange unit from Apple. Take it to your nearest Authorised Apple Service Centre and they will get it exchanged in a couple of days. Unfortunately this might cost almost as much as a new one.

Ipod nano firmare problem


if the firmware is damaged, then it's as simple as pluging it into your computer and on the ipod 'menu' there's a button below "check for new version"
click on that, it will reset your firmware
if that doesn't work, take it to apple
if they can't fix it, trash that old stupid thing, it's time to get a new ipod

Sounds like you're having logic board troubles. You need to take it to an ipod repair specialist to take a look at it. Sorry to bring the bad news. Chances are it's not a simple repair and will need a new logic board and they're not cheap:

first try using different cables just to make sure it's not the cable that's the problem.
if the problem still persists then it might be the ipod itself, and since it's 2 years old you'll probably have to pay to get it fixed, it's probably cheaper to just get a new ipod.

Did you try charging it with the USB cord or do you have an adapter that plugs into the wall? If you tried with the USB cord, how long did you let it charge?

There are a variety of things that could be wrong. If the Ipod sat for a long time the battery could be completely discharged. I've not had this problem on the Nano, but on an old Ipod Mini my daugher has I've noticed that sometimes I need to plug it in with a wall adapter to get the battery charged enough to start up quickly.

Forgive me for asking this next question...lots of times I ask these basic question and people get mad, but the key lock is off, right? On my Nano there's a small slider switch on the top. In one position the controls are all locked. Please verify that you've got it set to the right position. Mine is locked when I can see the red dot.

Assuming the battery is not totally shot and the key lock is off, it's also possible that it's just "locked up". To reset the Nano press and hold both Menu and Select (center button) for about 5 or 10 seconds. If the Ipod is alive this will reset it.

From your post, I'm not sure if you mean the Ipod was sitting for a long time without being used. If that's the case and it used to work, and it has not gotten wet or anything, then the most likely problem is a bad battery. There are services on the web you can find who will replace the battery for a fee. If, on the other hand, it just suddenly stopped working and the reset does not help you may have a more serious problem. Unfortunately there's no way to tell.

Now for the editorial section. I don't get paid for this. I know it's a strange hobby, but I lke to help when I can. The reason lots of people won't respond to questions like yours is because there's a real chance that your Ipod battery is dead or the unit is just plain broken. So they offer some suggestions which, obviously, won't work and then they get a bad rating.
