Question about Broan-NuTone Dryers

Attic fan won't turn off

The fan is easily accessible in our attic. It has a little thermostat with temperature settings and it is set for 90 degrees. The fan goes on automatically on a hot afternoon but then won't go off even after dark when it has cooled down nicely. I have to climb up there and turn the thermostat up to make it switch off. Once off, I can set it back at 90 and the fan doesn't come back on until the next hot afternoon.

SOURCE: Combo lite/vent fan/nite light affected by heat?

There's probably a thermal switch in the fixture which turns the fan on when the lights are on for a period of time and heat accumulates in the fixture. It sound like the heat from the attic is setting off the thermal switch. When the attic heat drops, the fixture works correctly.

This is a catch 22 situation, because if the upper housing in the attic is insulated from the attic heat, the insulation will prevent heat dissipation from the heat generated by the fixture's light bulbs. So, for safety reasons, the upper housing should not be insulated.
I'll need to work on this to come up with a fix.

SOURCE: My newly installed Broan-NuTone attic

Hi. The most likly cause of this type problem is the thermostat. Check the thermostat housing is it hot to the touch, is it close to a heat soarse, suchas, a motor or flu pipe for a water heater. If the thermostat has a adjustable heat range setting try setting it to the lowest setting if this shuts the unit off the calibration of the unit may not be set right. If the unit is new this should be covered under warranty.

Wiring a master flow PT6 thermostat to attic fan

I had a roofer install Master Flow PRO 3 and he did the initial wiring incorrectly. The black wire pairs were incorrectly connected and caused the fan to run 24-hours. I switched the black wires pairings and the fan shuts off if less than 100-degrees (the setting I chose) and comes on if more than 100-degrees. You may want to be sure that the black wire from the power source is connected to the black wire for the thermostat (black wire nearest the thermostat setting switch and closest to the power source wire). The black wire from the fan motor should be connected to the black wire closest to the fan motor's wire.

My newly installed Broan-NuTone attic fan worked fine for two days. Now it wont turn off, even though the temperature has dropped well (40 degrees)below the setting(100 degrees).

Attic fans

I just fixed a Broan-353 with a similar problem - the fan was short-cycling, turning on and off within a minute or less.

These fans have a thermostat which is designed to turn off 10 degrees below where it's set to turn on. Apparently, one failure mode is this temperature delta stops working I've had this happen twice, each time after about 3 years.

Replacement thermostats are available from Broan for about $30 http://parts.broan-nutone.com/broan/Shop It's a 10 minute repair if you have easy access to the fan.
