The electronic ignition system (a ceramic plate that glows red) lets some power pass through to allow the gas to flwo when it has reached lighting temperature. The ceramic lighter needs replacing. Either that or the general electronic in the stove are shot.

Broiler works but oven won't light like it's not

Hello,
The first thing you want to check is if the small shutoff lever built into the appliance valve has been accidently closed. This appliance valve is either in the back of the unit or under the top near the back. When you converted the stove, you also had to convert this same appliance regulator by flipping the top. Look at it again and see if there is also a small lever on the outside of it. Flip it and see if you get gas to the oven. If that doesn't solve it, did you adjust the oven orifice down? Although some models do swap out the oven orifices, so be sure you used the correct size. Make sure you have enough air on the adjustable air shutter on the end of the burner tube at the orifice. Typically it should be open 1/2 to 3/4 of the way. Since it is a used stove, it may have a spiderweb or bug nest blocking the burner inside, so you may have to remove it to inspect it. Does the oven require a pilot? If it doesn't have electronic ignition, then a pilot has to be lit before the oven will light. If it does have electronic ignition, is it glowing orange at all? These things are a lot easier to trouble shoot when you're looking at it, so I'm just throwing out ideas for you to check. Hope this helps you. I'm a propane guy, so let me know if you need more assistance and I'll try to help you further! Douglas

Oven doesn't light. I have a Maytag MGR5750. The pre-heat light comes on but no ignition. Stove top burners work okay.

First thing to do is verify if the hot surface igniter or spark igniter is working. If the oven has a bottom broiler compartment then you can check from the bottom compartment. If it has a top broiler then you may need to remove the inner bottom cover inside the oven to look at the burner and igniter. Now turn on the oven and watch for the hot surface igniter to start to glow or the spark igniter to come on. If the igniter comes on then give the gas control valve(located at the bottom broiler/storage compartment) a tap with a wrench or a screwdriver. If the burner comes on then shut the oven back off and on several times COMPLETELY. If it works then you may have fixed the problem by dislodging debris in the valve. If it does not come back on then the gas control valve may be defective or the igniter could be weak. The igniter should be tested with a ohm meter and if it tests good(500-700 ohms usually) then the gas control valve will need to be replaced otherwise the igniter is bad. On spark ignition systems there is a different procedure. Another thing to check is the "runaway valve" that is located on the gas regulator for the range. It is a little lever located where the oven gas pipe comes off the regulator and cuts the gas to the burner when closed.

Maytag gas oven won't light

After moving my oven out of the room to lay a floor, the oven wouldn't work when I put it back. Everything else worked (top burners, broiler).
I spent much time here and elsewhere on line trying to get enough knowledge to at least diagnose the problem, if not fix it. There is nothing worse than not knowing what is wrong when the repair guy comes, because you are then at their mercy, and some of them are less than merciful!
I took it apart, observed how the broiler worked, and assumed logically that the oven should work similarly.
The igniter on the bottom/oven part seemed slightly further away from the gas tube than the broiler igniter did. I just touched it and it moved!
As it turned out, the bracket that holds it in place had become jarred when I moved it, and had moved almost imperceptibly away from the gas tube.
This tiny difference was enough that the ignition didn't take place. Instead, after 4 clicks, the igniter shut off, a safety issue built into it, I suppose.
I attached the igniter to the gas tube with wire, readjusted and tightened the clamp, and Bob's your uncle, i have my oven back!
So, I guess the 'tip" is to simply make sure the igniter is close enough to the gas tube to actually ignite the gas.
As any repairman will tell you, the order to check things out in should always start with the simplest thing first!

Yes, it could very well be an igniter. The igniter can still glow and not work. The reason being that the igniter (depending on type) needs to produce .25 to .37 amps in order for the gas valve to open. If this potential is never reached, the igniter will glow, but gas will never flow. Or, gas will eventually flow for a weak (slow) igniter and will take forever to ignite. Which could be the reason for your low bake temperature. The burner does not stay lit all the time during the bake cycle. It will cycle on and off as needed to maintain the oven temperature. If the igniter is taking a long time to relight the burner, it could take a long time to heat. The broiler has a separate igniter and probably doesn't get used as often as the bake igniter. You can test the theory by swapping the igniter between the bake and broil burners and see if the problem moves to the broiler. Make sure you secure power to the range BEFORE attempting to remove the igniter, however. You should not have to turn off the gas to do this. Everything should be accessible through the oven door and broiler. I tell you this, because a new igniter (depending on the type you have) can run as much as $100. It will probably be worth the effort just to be sure. I hope this helps you.
