Put a new 9-cell battery in my Dell D630 and it shuts off without warning when battery meter is about 50%. I have gotten it to run down to 30% once, and it also shut off at 70%. There is no flashing orange to warn me either. Also, when I press the charge indicator on the battery itself it shows a charge roughly equal to what the battery meter shows. I have taken it out and put it back in (when fully charged and when shut off). I tried to restart after it shuts off and does not get to password before shutting off again. The battery says it is for a D620, does that matter. Lastly, when I put back the 6-cell battery, it works normally for a little over 2 hours, orange lamp comes on, and lets me plug back in before shutting off...This seems crazy to me...any help?

Disconnect the battery, unplug it, then open it up. There should be a small round battery called the CMOS battery somewhere in there. Pull that out. Then plug your computer in and boot it up without the CMOS battery. It should say password disabled. Turn it off, disconnect it, put it back together, and you're good to go.
the problem is not the battery; what has happened is the coolant paste that pulls the heat away from the cpu (main) chip to the fan has dried up. you must remove the fan/heat exchanger off the motherboard and, put new paste on the chips that the heat exchanger sits on
