Question about Schumacher & Fast Charge Starter Charger

1 Answer

Schumacker battery charger problem?

I have a Schumacker Model 1052A-PE Trickle/Battery charger/Engine start rated at 2/10/50 A.

I want to charge a 80 AH car battery. When I put the charger on the battery the following occurs:

1) No charger connected Battery Voltage = 5.62 V
2) Charger connected but not on Battery Voltage = 2.45 V
3) Charger on at 2A position Battery Voltage = 13.33 V
4) Charger on at 10A position Battery Voltage = 14.23 V
5) Charger on at 50A position Battery Voltage = 15.93 V

At any of these positions, the charger Ammeter always reads zero. It never gives a reading other than zero. The meter gives a little "bip" near zero when I change from 2A to 10A. I can always hear the transformer hum.

Am I charging the battery? I can leave the charger on over night and the battery never reads 12V.

Do I have a bad battery that won't take a charge, or a bad meter that won't indicate current or a bad battery charger?

Thank you for your help.

Unfortunately, that's not what the manual says. It says on the 10
A setting, the meter should start out reading 10A and then gradually
taper off as the battery charges.

You are charging. The meter corresponds to the level of charge in the battery. Try setting to 10 A for 4 hours, battery should be half-way up. To determine if battery id dead.. leave battery off charger once it is fully charged...test with a voltmeter after 10 min.....battery should still be above 12v...after1 hour it should still be above 12v...if not battery is spent.

I left a 1960 sears battery charger plugeed into my fuly charged boat battery, how long before it is ruined?

should not damage the battery or the charger at all
battery chargers reduce the charge rate as the battery is charged up and it reduce to a virtual trickle charge to maintain any internal leak from a standing battery
just ensure that the electrolyte level i the battery is maintained

I left a 1960 sears battery charger plugged into my boat battery, how long before it ruins the battery, when I forgot the battery was plugged in, it was fully charged.

Hey Mike, I can't find a Sears model #1960 charger, so I don't know the specs on it. If it is a typical old school 2 / 6 amp charger or any other that does not automatically shut off or switch to trickle charging, you may be in trouble in a day or two or longer - depending on the charge rate you picked and the percentage of full charge battery was before you connected it.

I have a Schumacker Model SS-51A-PE charger and was charging a boat battery when I heard a medium-to-loud pop. I checked the charger and realized there was no output. It hums quite loudly when plugged in...

Quite simply - the unit has suffered component failure - most likely more than one. Capacitors are the usual source of noisy 'bang' or 'pop' sounds, followed by diodes and bridge rectifiers. If you have some knowledge of electronics, you can attempt repair, but, if none, I suggest leaving possible repairs to someone who does.
The humming sound you hear is the transformer under stress, and, if left connected, it too will die.

When i start my bike rec tech v twin with battery charger hooked to the battery it starts no problem, if i dissconnect the charger cables it starts coughing and dies? can you please help

Sounds like you need a new battery. They only last about two years. Check to see that water is covering the plates in each cell. Use a trickle charger to charge the battery for about four hours. If the battery will not hold a charge then replace it. Please rate my answer.

DSealed Lead Acid Batteries: 12v 7ah; belongs in a Liftmaster LA400 gate control box. Can these batteries be charged using a trickle charger? I'm trying to find out if it's the battery not holding a charge...

Yes you can charge the 12 volt bttery on a trickle charger. You should use a 1 amp or less charger. Check the battery every 1/2 hour or so for heat. If it get's hot you should stop charging. Power packs that have a 12 volt rating will charge your battery safer and better but will take longer (like a cell phone charger) look at the voltage ratings on the charger. You will have to adapt the plug to hook it up and test for correct pos. and negative connections. The 7amp hour batery should be fully charged by a .5 amp (500ma) charger in about 14 hours (multiply the amps times hours of charge and do not go over the 7amp hours of the battery when deciding how long to charge). After charging check voltage, it should be around 12. Let the battery set for a few hours (overnight) and check the voltage again. It should be around 12 still. A fresh charge will usually show a higher reading (called a surface charge) than a battery sitting around. 4.5 v will not operate your device, 9.5 v or higher should.

Discharge Battery

If it is within warranty, have them replace the unit. Are you using a wall charger or a trickle-charger such as the USB Cable? The wall charger is the only way to truly charge it to full.

If you are using a USB charger or other trickle charger, after the device says it is fully charged remove it from the charger for about 2 minutes and then reconnect it. It will then charge (most of) the rest of the way.

If you don't do this, the problems gets worse and worse. After 1 day, the trickle charger may get you up to a 90% charge. After two days, 80%, etc. After a week you'll only be holding half a charge, even though the device is reporting a full charge while on the charger.

Another tip I have found is to perform a soft-reset after removing it from the charger, particularly if it has been plugged in for a long time at full charge (more than an hour or so). It seems like the device doesn't always detect that it has been unplugged and tries to **** down juice as if it were still plugged in. If you have noticed that your device gets pretty hot when the battery drains quickly, this is probably what is happening to you.

You also haven't mentioned the programs that you are using during the day. Some programs, particularly chat clients, will drain the battery in about 5 hours, though obviously you're not using anything like this while in flight mode.

One more thing. You noted that you were told that leaving it on the charger whenever possible is the thing to do. This is incorrect. The more the battery is exercised in this way, the shorter the lifespan of the battery will be. With any mobile device we're all bound to charge it every night, but once it is charged you want to take it off the charger. A battery being fully charged is just as bad as a battery being fully drained, so you want to keep it somewhere in between as much as possible. __________________

hi..
Disassemble and clean the carb, particularly the jets. I suspect the charge light being on is a result of your destroyed battery, which needs to be replaced. Sta-bil over the winter and a smart trickle charger will prevent the problems you are having in the future...

Meter Explanation

You are correct on all accounts. A high number means you dying battery is sucking more juice from the Schumacker. A low number means the battery is not as thirsty. That's how I always think of how to read the meter on mine. Slow charge is a better, deeper charge. The quick charge will get you going, but you should maybe follow it up using the normal mode - car alternator and prolonged drive time. I never use quick charge, personally.

GP 360 Radio Charger

On a Motorola charger, when the battery is charging the light should be a constant red (or amber depending on the charger). When the charge cycle is complete the light will change to solid green. Sometimes the solid green time is brief, as the battery will begin to lose charge, and the charger will go back into trickle mode and change once again to red (or amber). In most cases, a flashing light indicates a problem, such as a bad or shorted battery, an incorrectly seated battery, dirty battery contacts, or a bad connection with the battery. (Note: Batteries last 18-24 months typically. Check your date code for the age of the battery.)

There were several chargers made for the GP360, including but not limited to a 60-minute charger, a 90-minute charger, a 10-hour trickle charger and a 6-unit gang charger which would be a rapid rate, either 60- or 90- minute. If you would supply your charger's model number we could tell you which one you have.
