Timing off on Pfaff 1471

We have a repair manual that calls for a pin gauge. We can approximate the tool if we know the distance between the pins. We think it is approximately 1 cm.

I read somewhere (perhaps a Yahoo Pfaff group) that the tool you need costs ~$200. You might check the Yahoo groups for one called Pfaff FixIt (or something like that). There are some very helpful folks in that group. (You'll need a Yahoo account to join.)

My 1471 keeps going out of time. I need to know how to retime it myself. I can't even see where the adjustment us made or what to take apart to find and adjustment screw or nut. I need the manual instructions or a complete description of where to access the adjustment. I am very mechanical, so doing this will not be beyond me. The local sewing machine shop has now charged me twice $127 to fix/retime it and didn't seem inclined to show me how to do it.

I assume that you are attempting to time the hook. The hook timing should be about 2 to 2.3 mm rise in the needle bar from bottom dead center.

I have a Pfaff Creative 1471 and the pressure foot is very slow to come down and then is not keeping the proper pressure on the material. How do I open the machine to see if I just need to clean and oil?

I have had my machine for many years and this is about the only problem I have had with it. I had taken it to 2 different repairs shops about 2 years ago and the repair worked only temporarily. The only reason I had not tried this solution before is that I didn't know how to get the side cover off to reach the mechanism. I just recently learned how and the oil worked like a charm after a little cleaning with a Q-tip. At least now if the problem reoccurs, the fix will be easy and free.
