Question about Televison & Video

I have a Toshiba 55H70 which had severe convergence problems. I justed replaced both STK392-110 convergence ICs which I purchased from Bluestreak International Components for $5.99 each. Put it all back together and it would not power up. Flashing power LED. I have discovered, if I unplug the green convergence connector the set will power up and the red and blue convergence adjustments will function. I could have gotten a bad IC or I got it too hot with the soldiering iron. Should I try new ICs from a different vendor or go shopping for a new set?

OK, the reccommendation is to try again to replace the convergence ICs in my Toshiba 55H70. I see a lot of comments regarding replacing the STK392-110 with either STK-392-110T, STK392-120, or STK392-180. I assume the suggestion is that these are more robust parts. Which part number should I order and where should I order from to get a good part delivered quickly? The privious parts were 110s ordered from BIC.

  • james_higgin Mar 11, 2009

I don't mind investing another $40 in parts and a few hours of time if it has a resonable chance of fixing the problem. I want to make sure I using the best parts before I try since appearently a bad replacment IC was my problem the 1st attempt.

  • james_higgin Mar 11, 2009

OK, www.partstore.com is the source. Which part number should I order? The STK392-110 is what I removed. It sounds like they have a lot of heat dissapation problems. Is there an alternate part number that may yield more reliable performance?

  • james_higgin Mar 12, 2009

Thanks. I have done soldiering but I'm not all that neet "the bigger the glob the better the job" is more appropriate for my work. Anyway, I removed the board and examined with a bright light and magnifying glass. I found nothing obvious but wicked up excess soldier and cleaned up soldiering on a number of pins. Put it all back together and still get the flashing power LED. I've pulled the board back out and plan to take it to work with me and get one of our NASA qualified soldiering techs to take a look at it. Assuming he doesn't see anything wrong with my soldiering, I was going to get him to pull the ICs and try a install a new pair of STKs. Unless you think ther is a better choice I was going to try Sanyo brand STK392-110 from www.partstore.com Do you agree? Any other suggestions?

I have no idea what your comment regarding search for the model number refers to!

Search for the model number. You might not need the part number.

You would be better off with buying a new tv. because the cost for the part and the repair service will charge you about (in total) 300-600 dollors so in that money add some and you will get a new lcd screen/tv.

Have you done any hand soldering before replacing the ICs?
I would suggest to double check the soldering from the newly install parts using a magnification aid of 4X. A shorted solder joint will cause the TV not to power ON unless you disconnect the geen connector from the convergence board.
I wouldn't say you got defective parts and the STK392-110 should work fine.

If you feel more confident to replace for new Sanyo STKs then is up to you because it could happen that the ones you've install, one might be DOA. I would also suggest to ask the tech to check the low value resistors near the convergence ICs or if you need the schematics let me know where to send you a copy.

Yes get the new IC's.
They all have to be new when even on has to be replaced. It isn't all that uncommon to get a bad one delivered anyways.
I would try a new one. Sounds like that is your problem.

Either the STK's or sanyo's would work, STK is better for performance, but Sanyo is more reliable.

Toshiba 55H70

It could be that this time the convergence module went. I have replaced many convergence ICs and don't believe I have ever had any go out within 6 months. That does not mean that they can't. Remove the leads from the convergence area to isolate the ICs as you said you were told. Now remove the digital convergence board which should be nearby and probably will be in a metal box for noise protection. If you can I would unsolder the convergence ICs to totally take them out of the circuit and just in case one or both shorted out. Once everything I talked about has be removed try the unit. If your problem is in the convergence only your set should work but have an ugly picture. Let me know what you find and we will go from there.

I cannot adjust the convergence.

You have convergence output failure. The output ICs will need to be replaced and possibly a small component like a resistor or two as well. Expect to pay a service company $350-$450 to resolve this.
