Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

Open Question

My Kenmore Microwave Model #721-626-49200 hood fan turns on and off randomly.

The door latch also seems to be failing intermittently as we sometimes have to jiggle the door to get the sensor to realize it is closed. The light will not turn off and the microwave will not work until you lift the door a bit and or jiggle the door. The hood fan will turn on by itself even when the microwave and range are not in use. Sometimes even in the middle of the night. We have tried unplugging the microwave for extended periods of time, but the problem reappears when plugged back in. Are these symptoms fixable with a simple part replacement (thermostat, sensor...?) The microwave itself cooks great otherwise.

It sounds like your controller may be failing. Or it could be an electrical line problem. Any other electrical itmes giving you trouble? Has anyone measured the voltage level of your power line? It should be around 110-125 volts AC. If it's significantly lower or higher, you may have a bad connection in your breaker panel or in the wiring leading to the home.

SOURCE: Microwave Door Switch Problem?

That model number has too many digits after the JVM. Could it be JVM1339BW02 or JVM1339BW002?

If one is bad, it's probably the bottom switch, whose wiring goes back to the power relay, thermostat, or fuse, depending on eact model.

The switch with thin wires going to a ltitle connector on the board is the door sense switch. That's not likely your culprit.

I usually recommend you replace them all while you're at it.

It sounds like it may actually be a loose or misaligned door or door switch mount.

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical safety information, info on door switch diagnosis and replacement, and
disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

GE models have a very helpful "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel. Handy in troubleshooting.

If it goes dead or blows the breaker or GFI when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside. Its continuity must be checked.

Door switch or mount trouble can be caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimes it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. Other times, it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. This tab can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa:.

There may also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

The door latch is a safety interlock that prevents your microwave oven from doing what it is doing. The latch has failed and has to be replaced.

If the cooktop lights recently failed, it may need circuit board repair.

Or it may be a failed hood TCO.

Check the door switches if one is bad it may think the door is being opened and stop the unit from running. If it is from a bad connection it will get worse as it gets hotter while running.

Hi, I have a Kenmore 87103 microwave and it has started acting up lately. When I place something in the microwave and set the timer, the timer counts down however the microwave doesn't work (no sound and...

Mine also does the same thing however I only need to lift the door upwards slightly (after it's closed) and it engages the High Voltage Transformer, thus working as normal.

Once you know that, you can get it to work every time. I beleive the clips on the door don't properly stop latch in correctly and the safety feature keep the microwave from acutally turning truly "ON".

Yes. One of your door switches is not working. It could be an alignment issue or a faulty switch. There are actually 3 switches in the door latch area.

Kenmore 721 microwave fan turns on by itself

I have the exact same problem with my Kenmore Microwave model 721 that we bought in October of 2005. The Fan will just randomly turn itself on even when we are not cooking. It has been doing this for the last few months and is starting to become more frequent. There is no way to turn it off except to unplug it for several hours.
Was there a recall for this defect ?

Just stop working

A microwave can be dead for many reasons.

If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout (TCO) / thermal fuse on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / body of the oven.

If it goes dead for a while during or after cooking then comes back on, the magnetron is probably overheating and causing the magnetron thermostat to open.

Then when it cools, it closes the circuit and allows power through again.

When checking thermostats, if it has a hood fan thermostat, that should read open, as opposed to the others, which should read closed.

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

If it goes dead or blows the breaker when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

If it's intermittent or random, it may be a bad connection, usually on the control board or a loose fuse holder, or even an intermittent fuse.

You should do a continuity test on the fuse while it's in the holder (with the microwave unplugged, of course) then turn the fuse by hand or take it out and put it back in, then test it again.

If you remove the fuse, then press the meter leads against the ends, it can allow internal contact to be made and make a bad fuse appear to be good.

Maytag mmv1153aaw ehaust fan turns on

Normally the hood / exhaust fan comes on when you turn it on, or when the temperature at the bottom of the microwave gets high enough to close the hood thermostat.

Sometimes a failure of the hood thermostat or on the control board can cause intermittent or unintended operation of the hood fan.

A thermostat can only trip so many time before it fails permanently.

One way to test it is to unplug one wire from the thermostat, tape it up to prevent it from shorting, and see how it acts for a couple of days.

If it stops failing, the hood thermostat is bad., If it continues to fail, chances are you have a failure on the control board, which we can repair for $39.95 in most cases.
