The instructions for this procedure are quite involved if you are talking about formatting and reinstalling the laptop operating system software. You need to have these things:
A Legitimate copy of the Operating system software on an official microsoft release CD that is bootable. Then you go to the bios in the startup usually by pressing the delete key while laptop is booting. then go to the boot proiority list and make sure the cd drawer is in the first option. Reboot the computer and then when the option to boot from cd comes up, press any key and it will boot from the cd.
Once the installation options appear, you need to select the hard disk to use and then select the format and install Windows XP. Select format using NTFS filing system and then the process starts to format the drive and install the file need to complete setup.
Once the GUI portion of set up installs and you have logged in for the first time, don't forget to change the boot priority back to the hard disk!
Hope this helps :D
put winxp cd in tray at boot up press F12 - right-arroweto CD icon --> Enter winxp should go into install you'll probably need a version of winxp that can recognize Sata hdd. or hae sata drivers handy.
you most certainly must change your drive because its defective...
the good thing is that you do not have to open the laptop apart to do it but unscrew just one... screw (!) and pull it out.
all the pc-shops that sell drives for laptops would change it for you at once... just take the laptop with you.
as for the cost, here in greece a dvd-recorder for laptops is about 30 - 40 euro for a SATA type and about 50 for IDE type. In the shop they will see if you need a SATA or an IDE drive when they will take out the old one.
