Can an eMachine computer be configured for wireless use?

I am being given an eMachine computer of an unknown model and I want to know if it can be configured to be used wirelessly. I know the router works wirelessly since my daughter uses her laptop when she is home from college. The computer I am currently using is a dinosaur, IBM Aptiva with the memory to run programs but no speed. It works for the uses my mother needs. I would like to set my eMachine up in the bedroom about 20 feet away and I would have to go wireless to do this. If it can be done, how would I go about doing this? Thank you very much.

You would need to purchase a wireless card. The card will come with the software you need or you can use Windows to configure.

Try the D-Link DWL-G510 or similar.

This is relatively easy to accomplish. If it is a desktop you will need to buy a wireless card and put it in. The instructions will come with the card. Or you can use a wireless USB device. That is what I use. I just plug it in to a USB port and install the software. It is pretty easy. Laptops can also use the USB device or you could buy a PCMCIA card (if you laptop has that port - most do, unless it is really old).
IF you go to a major store the people in the store should be able to help you purchase something for this computer, just bring the model# and what type it is (desktop or laptop). It really should be quite easy.

Hi there.
Yes you can run the desktop through a wireless connection and its fairly easy to set up.
You have 2 choices, firstly, you can buy a USB wireless dongle, with this you just stick it into one of the USB ports, put the install CD into the drive and follow the instruction on screen or it may install automatically.
Secondly, you can buy a PCI wireless card, this goes inside the computer case and is not for a novice and you will need help from someone who has an idea about computers so the first choice is probably the most convenient for you.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

Wheres the password for wifi

Some later model wireless routers have the Password (ie.Encryption key) and the SSID already configured in the wireless router and this information is printed on a label on the bottom of the router.
These settings can be used to configure the wireless card and wireless adapters in your computer/laptop.
If these settings do not suit you, then it can be changed to suit your requirements.
The encryption key secures your data and wireless connection from unauthorized access. To configure the wireless settings in the router, connect a LAN cable from your computer to the wireless router, then open a Browser on your computer and enter the router's configuration IP address, then enter the admin login and password and then go to the wireless settings and configure the SSID and Encryption key.
The router's encryption key can be a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA or WPA2 key.If you use the Passphrase method select either WEP or WPA or WPA2 to generate the encryption key. You can enter the WEP or WPA or WPA2 key with 8 to 63 ASCII characters or 64 Hex digits.
Most people use Passphrase which is easier to remember eg. I was born in January 1988.
The strongest and latest security is WPA2, the weakest and oldest is WEP. To connect to your wireless router from the computer/laptop, configure the wireless card in your computer/laptop with the router's wireless settings ie SSID, plus the WPA or WPA2 encryption key. Then computer/laptops can communicate with your wireless router. http://www.fixya.com/support/r10267861-network_security_key

To connect your computer to the Internet via a wireless router, you click the Refresh network list, then Choose your wireless network and then click Connect to your secured Wireless Network, it will asks for a Network Key before allowing you to connect into your wireless network. This Network Key is either the WEP, or WPA or WPA2 Encryption key that is used to configure the Wireless Router. The Passphrase is an alternate way to setup the Encryption key.
When you are requested for a Network Key, you can just enter the Passphrase that was used to configure the Encryption key in the wireless router. http://www.fixya.com/support/r5270415-network_password_network_address For information on securing your wireless network, configuring the wireless router and configuring the wireless card in the laptop/computer, please click on this link and follow my instructions :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3559128-wireless_router_security

E430 laptop i have just bought from staples does it have a modem built in or do i need to purchase a wireless modem cannot get connected to the internet

Which 'E430' ????

This model-name is used by ACER & TOSHIBA & EMACHINES.

Why not ask STAPLES for the specifications?

Or, read the manuals that came with the computer.

Or, access 'www.acer.com' or 'www.toshiba.com' or 'www.emachines.com', and read the specifications from the web-site.

Given that you _just_ purchased it, it's quite "normal" that _any_ brand-new computer _will_ have a wireless adapter.

WPA is not very stable and I have seen many problems with this. Simply change router setting to be configured with WEP and use a good strong password in hex 0-9 and a-f . WPA is horrible any way, and who the heck is gonna sit out side your home to hack it? It is not a WIN 7 problem but more like aging encryption.

avery you need to configure your router to avoid having people using your internet conection:

please provide the model and maker of your router and I can walk you through a desirable configuration. or if you want to try it yourself check on your router's manual as usually there will be instructions on what you need to do...

for you to have a general idea i suggest your read the following article that explains common things you need to set up like:
1. change the default SSID (the network name or name of your router/access point)
2. hide your ssid (so only you know the name and set up the computers you want manually to use it)
3. a network key/passphrase: so in order for other computer to join your network a key/passphrase or password is provided first
4. encryption: so your neigbors don't decipher what you're transmitting wirelessly.
5. configure your computer to access your wireless network after configure your router with the configuration you set.

if you have any questions post back and make sure to note the router model and maker

if you want to configure your access point with your router you may try the ff:
Step 1: Connect the Ethernet port of the access point to one of the Ethernet ports of the router
Step 2: Make sure the power adapter is plugged to an available power outlet
Step 3: Check if the corresponding LEDs on the access point are lit
Step 4: After connecting the devices together, configure the access point’s wireless settings
Step 5: Open the access point’s web-based setup page
Step 6: When the access point’s web-based setup page opens, change the SSID, Channel, and Wireless Security.

Cannot connect my lap tp to the internet via my d link router on my desk top

Please indicate which is your issue.

Is your issue with the router's administrative password to used to configure the router?

Please confirm your router's manufacturer and model number.

IF not go to Wireless Configuration

If the router needs to be reset (because of an unknown password) do you know the proper settings to reconfigure the router? If not or even if unsure please provide your Internet Service Provider's name so we can get accurate instructions before proceeding any further on this password issue.

Wireless Configuration

Is your issue with the passphrase/password for a wireless adapter to access a secured wireless network using either WEP or WAP encryption?

Do you have another wireless computer that works? -- you may be able to find the passphrase in the configuration of that machine's wireless adapter avoiding the need to have the administrators password for the router for the time being.
