Question about GE Spacemaker Washer and Dryer Electric Laundry Center

Dryer Overheating My dryer was plugged in, but hasn't been running for 2 days. When I opened it this morning to take some clothes out, the metal grate where the heat comes from was glowing red-hot. When I unplugged it, it immediately stopped. It was set to mid-cycle. Should the element still heat up when the dryer isn't running?

Clothes dryer overheating?

use your dryer on air dry only (not heat dry) run about 2 min. check if your dryer is hot, that is heating element is short to ground and if your dryer is cold, check your dryer air venting system. (open the door if you see lint on door panel, it is a sing of bad air flow, it is dangerous to fire) hope its help.

Identification of Dryer Problems

Signs that an electric dryer may need some repairs include the dryer not heating, clothing not drying fast enough, overheating of the dryer, the door not locking shut and the dryer not starting at all. Any of these are signs of an underlying problem that can usually be solved without the help of a repairman.
Effects of Dryer Issues

If an electric dryer doesn't heat properly, it prevents the clothing from becoming dry in most cases. Restricted venting can cause clothing not to dry fast enough, as the dryer will cycle the heating. Overheating dryers can ruin clothing or cause burns. If the door on a dryer wont close, it is impossible to get any laundry dried. A dryer not running at all can be very frustrating and lead to owners needing to use a laundromat.
Considerations for Solving Common Problems. If the dryer wont heat up, owners should check the circuit breaker to see if it's down. The voltmeter at the wall plug should read 240 volts. Checking the power cord can show owners if the wires are burned where they meet the dryer.Clothing not drying fast enough and overheating are signs of restricted venting. Removing the vent hose from the dryer can help owners decide if this is the cause of clothing not drying. If the hose is removed and the dryer runs normally, the vent should be cleaned.White plastic or thin foil ducts can also lead to overheating. Only metal ducts should be used with dryers. Kinks in the vent hose can also lead to heating issues. Overheating can also be caused by a shorted heater coil, a bad operating thermostat or worn drum seals. If the door on an electric dryer will not close, it is usually a problem with the door catch. This can be solved easily by purchasing a replacement door catch for the dryer.
When a dryer wont run, it could be a number of issues. The circuit breaker may be down or the wires at the plug may be burned. It may be an issue with the door switch. The door switch should click when closed. The thermal fuse should be checked for any issues.
Preventing Dryer Problems
The electric heating element, thermostats, fuses and thermal cut-off should be checked regularly for continuity. Dryer vents should not exceed 18 feet without a helper blower in the duct. Vents that are run vertically need to be cleaned out once a year. A meter can be purchased and used to diagnose problems with your electric dryer.
Warnings and Tips.Inexperienced people should never try to fix electrical problems at home. A professional should always be used if dryer owners suspect a more serious problem. Dryer owners can purchase kits to make cleaning dryer vents easier.

My ler4634eqo throws heat but takes 1 1/2 to dry cothes

before you look at the dryer , check your venting. 80% of all our dryer calls are a result of poor airflow. Vent connector between dryer and main vent or outside wall should be 4" rigid metal or heavy metal flex. Dryer manufacturers consider plastic, vinyl and foil to be improper due to their tendency to crimp and flatten easily. Vent coluld also be stopped up.
Check outside exhaust opening to be sure it is not clogged or otherwise closed. Best way to check vent sometimes is to pull dryer out, remove vent and run a load of clothes. If drying time is significantly better, then venting is your problem.
Whirlpool sells a heavy metal flex vent kit , part #4396028

My dryer has heat on the inside of it but it is not drying my clothes. i have to run the dry cycle three times.

You need to make sure your exhaust is not kinked or clogged up any. If the dryer does not have good air flow, it will not dry good.
Best way to check this is to remove the exhaust line from the back and dry some cloths with it off.

Loud metal on metal noise, and sparks in rear of dryer

I've seen sparks flying out of an appliance before!
It could be a bad motor so be careful if you plan to plug it in again!
I would leave the back cover off before trying again so as to see what's sparking!

Whirlpool dryer

not element, same element runs Hi and low temp
whirlpool dryers have 2 thermostats,
40degreeC (low)100F
60degreeC (high)140F

the 60degree thermostat has failed
cost is between $15 and $40 depending on how the 'parts guy' feels on that day
the dryer is easy to open, check any of the 'change belt' questions or Joks instruction brief

Time skips from 18 minutes to 6 minutes on automatic mode

It is the moisture sensor system, it is not sensing the wet clothes. Open the door, inside you should see a part with 2 metal bars that is around 3 inches long, clean these bars with a mult purpose cleaner. Sometimes fabric softner sheets and detergent builds up on this so that the machine cannot sense the moisture. Hope this helps.
