Question about IBM eServer xSeries 346

1 Answer

Physical drives not found

We acquired a used eserver xseries 346 which came with two harddrives installed.

When we booted it up we got a physical drives not found error and attempts to install operating system fail because of not found drives.

Both of the drives have orange lights on.

What to do next?

I would like to add that the specific message said two physical drives defunct. Not sure what that exactly means. Are the hard-drives dead or something else is wrong?

  • alex483 Mar 12, 2009

The seller claimed that it was in working condition when we bought it. The BIOS shows no drivers active. It says one logical drive is offline and two physical drives are defunct.

I have downloaded IBM's server setup utility and dynamic analysis utility to see if it can help shed any light on what's going on with the harddrives. I've also downloaded UpgradeXpress cd to get the BIOS and firmware up to specs.

I've resolved the problem. Everything's working fine and have installed a new operating system. What I did was just upgrade the firmware using UpdateXpress then run IBM's server setup utility which whiped old data from the harddrives and restored the RAID controllers to default. I then just rebuilt a new RAID array and the rest was history.

    Thanks guys though.

Was this server in good/working condition when purchased? There is a chance the backplane needs replaced.

Do the drives show up in the server BIOS or the SCSI BIOS?

I"t says one logical drive is offline and two physical drives are defunct."

sounds like RAID. Try booting up off of one drive. If there is no OS, try keeping one drive in the drive bay and see if you get a orange light then. like dereknewland said, could be the backplane.

Will not start up

hi , Reuben

I would suggest you try safe mode.
Safe mode is a troubleshooting option for Windows that starts your computer in a limited state. Only the basic files and drivers necessary to run Windows are started. The words "Safe Mode" appear in the corners of the display to identify which Windows mode you are using. If an existing problem does not reappear when you start in safe mode, you can eliminate the default settings and basic device drivers as possible causes.
If you don't know the cause of the problem, you can use the process of elimination to help you find the problem. Try starting all of the programs you commonly use, including the programs in your Startup folder, one by one, to see if a program might be the cause of the problem.
Follow the steps to boot the computer in safe mode with networking:
1. Restart your computer if it is powered on.
2. Tap the F8 key after your computer initially powers on.
3. Once you see the Advanced Boot Options menu you can stop tapping.
4. Use the up/down arrow keys to highlight your selection.
5. Select Safe Mode with Networking and press Enter.
6. You should see drivers loading, and then please wait.
7. You should then be at the Welcome Screen.
8. Logon to your computer using an account with Administrator privileges.

How can i download falsh player on to 2011 imac desk top threw Linux ubentu browser ?

Ok, there are a number of issues with you spelling so I am going to assume you meant the Ubuntu OS. If that is the case the Flash Player install is done by the following:

If you are using the more modern versions of Ubuntu, simply install the Adobe Flash application from Ubuntu Software Centre.

If you are using a version that does not support the Software Centre, try:

Go to the Adobe website.
  • Click on "Download the Latest Player," and choose ".deb for Ubuntu" from the drop down list.
  • Choose "Save File" from the pop up window.
  • Open a terminal window.
The terminal window will be found under Applications -> Utilities.
  • Change to the directory where your downloaded file was saved.
    cd Download
  • Install the libcurl3 library: sudo apt-get install libcurl3
  • Install the Flash Player: sudo dpkg --install install_flash_player_<version>_linux.deb
Replace <version> with the latest version number.
  • Restart Firefox.
  • Check that Flash Player was installed.

Hide file folder WITH A password

For the most part you need 3rd party software, or a USB drive with security built in. Just remember you are at the mercy of those companies if you lose the password. Plus some software will only works locally. For instance if someone removes the drive and connects it to another computer the files are wide open.
Win 7 Ult and Ent (high end editions have Bitlocker built in.
A simple way is to create a folder within his login account docs and choose hidden as the properties. The only way to see it would be to change folder properties and make hidden files visible. This is just cloaking, because anybody with admin rights can see them.

    Don't start up

check that all removable media is removed from computer, flash drives etc,if this message still appears the reinstall your os, there are several reasons for this error. You may have to replace your hard drive if that is the issue- you would know because after reinstall (if it makes it thru it) it will only crash again, this is much too big of a subject to sum it all up here and now, good luck... more questions just ask

How do i reset my computer to an earlier date?

Most computers have a RTC or "real time clock" in the BIOS. BIOS (or "Basic Input Output System") controls how data gets into and out from the processor (via keyboard, disk, etc.). Be careful making changes. The BIOS is normally only accessable when the computer is powered on or reset, and then only while performing the POST (or "Power On Self Test"). At this time your screen may display text describing memory, drives, controllers, etc. Some machine have a "silent boot" enabled which displays a manufacturer's graphic or logo instead of this data. It is during this time the the BIOS may be accessed. Depending on the manufacturer of your computer, a key (Delete, Escape, F1 or some other) or key combination (ALT + F1, ALT + S, or some other) will be needed. It is required to press the key or key combination prior to the Operating System loading message(s). This can be done be repeatedly pressing the key (or key combination) once every second (or two) during the POST. Holding the key(s) down the entire time - or pressing them too often will result in an error, and require starting over again.

Once the BIOS screen is presented, you will have to scroll the entire page(s) to find the clock. Most BIOS brands have more than just a single page of settings. Using the the up, down, left, right, PgUp, PgDn & Enter keys - navigate to the clock hours and minutes and adjust as needed. Make sure that you SAVE changes before exiting the BIOS screen. Upon exit, the computer will reboot with your settings.

Your Operating System may also provide a way for you to change the system time (and date) as well. Try clicking on the time / date to see if it will bring up a dialog box that allows you to make the change.

I hope this helps and good luck! If my answer was helpful, please rate it "4 thumbs up" Thanks!

How to install bluetooth on my pc

    Hello,
This depends on what kind of bluetooth you plan on using. Certain things like a Blu-Ray DVD Drive needs to be installed and hooked up internally in your PC, while something like Headphones or a Keyboard simply just needs a USB-based transmitter or a Bluetooth card that plugs into your computer.

    Hope that helps,
