A snow blower needs a low weight oil because it is operated when temps are low, 0-20w, or 5-20w should be good

SOURCE: mtd pro snow blower runs then die

it sounds to me like either the oil pressure switch is being plugged after startup and causint the engine to quit then the plug settles until you start it again and it plugs again easiest way to test is to take the swith and remove the wire to it and see if the engine starts and keeps running, if so then replace the old pressure switch. If this does not solve the problem then the only other thing I can think of is the needle valve is partially pluged, at startup the fuel bowl is full and the engine startsbut after starting the fuel bowl runs low on fuel as it is not filling fast enough and the engine stalls. By the time you try starting it again the fuel bowl is filled again and the whole thing starts all over. Hope This Helps Don

SOURCE: mtd snow blower,8hp 2 stage, 1995, Problem: oil

The oil leak normaly would make the 'friction disc' inside the frame slip so as to not drive the axle.
Locate the oil leak
#1 engine crankshaft seal
#2 engine crankcase cover gasket
#3 engine overfull so that the excess oil is coming out of the crankcase breather tube and running down inside the frame

After it sits for a while the wheels will not turn and are stuck?

Hi William:
Snowblowers tend to get a lot of wet slushy use and if the are put away wet they can easily rust. Try to make sure all the mucky stuff is cleaned off (air hose works great) and spraying penetrating oil or WD-40 generously over all the moving bits except belts never hurts.

MTD Snow Blower will NOT start up!

fuel float stuck --- need carburator repair -- to check it has spark then pull spark plug --- if wet blow off spark plug and check spark on plug then squirt a small fuel out of oil can into plug hole and put plug back in -- if engine fires on first pull carburator needs fixing -- check by squirting fuel in carburator with oil can and see if you can keep it running

MTD Snowblower starts good but runs very rough

Carb adjustment. There is usually a HIGH and LOW fuel mixture adjustment on the carb. Sounds like the LOW needs to be adjusted. Do a search on the Internet for a service manual for your particular model/make. Simple job IF you have the manual there for guidance.
Good Luck

Your snowblower carburator is gummed up. Go to an auto parts store and get a can of a carb. cleaner called seafoam. Follow the directions as far as how much to put into the snowblower gas tank. Run it for a few minutes and it will clear up. Regards, Joe

Tecumseh 8hp HIGH REVING! snowblower

Hi,

be careful, if the engine over revs it may just explode. These engines are very picky if over sped and easily blow up.
Your problem may be a broken throttle control rod, have look at that first. If the control rods are fine and in place it could be the fly wheel governor is worn out.
