Question about RCA F35317 35" TV

1 Answer

Looks like a lightning bolt when I turn on the TV.

I have an RCA Model #F35317 Chassis #CTC203CA9. The power at my house flickered a few times during a storm 2 weeks ago. The following day I turned on the television and I had no picture but I had sound. I changed the input to the S-video input and the screen was still blank. I turned it off and unplugged it and then plugged it back in after a few minutes. When I turned on the television it looked like a lightning bolt shooting down the screen and crackling sound came from the back of the television. Any advice??? Is this something that I can look into myself?

Unfortunately, this is what we call in the industry total meltdown due to merging circuitry. you will have to replace the entire circuit arrangement in this set. the audio ic's are probably the only components that are still operational. this repair will cost quite a bit to be honest. you may be better off purchasing a new set. sorry for the bad news there.

Both of my tv's died yesterday. My apex wont turn on anymore an the panasonic has no picture. Whats wrong.

As an electrician, when someone loses more then 1 item of electronics in 1 day, its almost
always traceable to a nearby lightning strike, accompanied by a lack of surge protection for
the VCR/TV/Computer/Stereo/uninsured valuable electronic item/XBOX 360. Surge protection can
be provided by the consumer at the power strip (a good one with builtin protection and a
warranty costs $20, whereas a zero-protection 4-outlet or 6-outlet power strip will cost $4-$5).
Your electrician can provide whole-house protection, or per-circuit protection at
the breaker box, where a GFCI breaker (or better, an AFCI breaker) can be installed.
GFCI = ground fault circuit interruptor
AFCI = Arc fault circuit interruptor
Lightning protection is especially important in Florida, which is the "lightning capital of the world."
I've never found a good solution to lightning-fried electronics (random power supply components are destroyed), other than renters insurance or homeowners insurance.
If desperate, you could try replacing the entire power supply as a module, but even this provides
no guarantee of a fix - lightning damage can extend beyond the power supply.
When traveling, I will always unplug everything before I leave (except the security system),
and also turn off the breakers to unneeded house circuits (which kills the wall switches that
control interior lighting - forcing a burglar to use their flashlight instead of interior lighting)
which is the least convenient lightning protection, but highly effective, and cheap (free).

The TV was on when I lost power to the house during a lightning storm. When the power came back on, the TV would attempt to turn on, the light would flash, but it would not stay on. Any ideas? Its a $50...

By what you are stating it could be that the power supply board could have been burned on your tv because of the black out, plus if your tv was still on when the power came back on the suddent bust of power could have coused the power supply board to burn out among other parts on your tv.

27r410t no power

did you check that you are receiving a good hot (a consistent 110 ac) check the tv on a different outlet otherwise the chassis board has malfunctioned inside the tv. Probaly the flyback transformer which converts the 110 ac to thousands of volts to power the CRT (picture tube) which has failed more than likely. Usually the culprit after sustaining a surge from a lightning strike. Not worth the repair just replace go to your local pawn shop for a great deal on another used tv

Circuit board removal

The whole plastic holder will need to be slide out by removing two screws holding it from underneath. Once you have the whole plastic holder out, remove the "F" connector nut and the power cord from it along with some small plastic like pins that hold the audio/video RCA plugs. Look for a couple of screws holding the board to the holder and then hold the board and slide the holder out.
Good Luck.

TV is flickering

That unit is a ctc203 chassis and if it's never been in the shop before it's probably ring cracks in the HV or power supply circuit. Not an expensive fix at the shop and those chassis tend to be a bit of a bear dismantle (lots of smd). You might consider taking it in for a pro to look at it..
If not the chassis removes as a tray assembly and then dismantles from there. Good magnification, light, dmm and solder gun and you got it whipped..
Good luck!

No Picture - Black Screen. Intermittent Sound

I repaired an RCA same model with a very similar symptom. I found bad connections on the printed circuit board at L411 and L 412 (coils) in the horizontal drive circuit. Give the set a good Fonzie ( Happy Days) smack on the side and see if it comes on. LOL. Bad connections are common with that model. It is probably worth fixing and no, lightning didnt do it.

Blinking light wont turn on Toshiba TV CE19H15

Yes, it's quite possible that you indeed may have sufferd from a Power Spike, induced by lightning during the storm, esspecially if plugged in during said storm. I have had quite a few customers ova the years with this exact problem. I always advise my clients to unplug ALL devices during a storm, and for ones that simply cannot be unplugged then some sort of Spike/Surge Protection device MUST be used. As a matter of interest, I have written many a report to insurance companies to support a claim for a replacement.
