Question about Maytag Neptune FAV6800AW Top Load Washer

1 Answer

The neptune TL model 6800AWW makes a terrible noise at what seems to be the end of the wash cycle. Is this a rebalance? Because it sounds like metal against metal. Or could this be a belt issue. The machine is between four and five years old. I bought it new at the Maytag store in Chandler AZ.

You mentioned you only hear the noise at the end of wash cycle which is the spin cycle. I wanted to separate the two machine functions Wash/Spin to isolate what part of the machine cycle is causing the grinding noise. Is this grinding noise repeatable with ever wash load? Is it a function of wash load size? I assume you are not failing in Spin Cycle with dc or UC errors is that correct? How do you feel about further troubleshooting which may require lifting the top of the washer to observe wash basket operation and pulling off the front panel to try to identify the source of the grinding noise?

Here is link to the FAV6800A/9800A Service Manual see page 40 and 41 which will show the top raised and front panel removal steps. If this is not a course of action you wish to take on you may want to consider having an appliance repair service take a look at the issue. Couple more notes about releasing the washer top.

To raise the top of the machine. Insert a flat blade putty knife approximately 2.5” from the left and right sides of the washer top, depress the spring tabs securing machine top to the washer base. See page 33 of the Service Manual for putty knife insertion point.

Hello samshome, I don’t think it’s a belt issue. I understand your machine makes it to end of cycle without failing. The display fail codes associated with an unbalance condition in spin cycle are “dc” or “UC” errors. Can you run a Spin Only cycle with no clothes in the wash basket and see if you hear the metal against metal sound. If it runs 5 mins with without hearing the metal against metal sound you can terminate the spin cycle with the power off button. Thank you and waiting for your feedback.

Hello acelmo3,

Thank you for the model number, can you give me the first two digits of your serial number. That number is located on the back right side of the console. I only need the first two digits.10, 12, 16,,,etc.

Let's try to troubleshoot the grinding noise issue, You mention the spin cycle. Have you taken any dc or UC errors in spin cycle? Can you try the following and let me know what you find?

1. Open the lid and rotate tie wash basket by hand Counter Clock Wise, CCW. The wash basket should rotate freely with no restriction. The wash basket will not rotate Clock Wise, CW by hand.

2. Raise the top of the machine. Insert a flat blade putty knife approximately 2.5” from the left and right sides of the washer top, depress the spring tabs securing machine top to the washer base. Raise the top of the machine to observe the wash basket and tumbler action described in step 2. (See page 33 of the Service Manual for putty knife insertion point). Also see pic attached.

3. With the top raised start a Spin Only cycle with no clothes in the wash basket, observe the wash basket it will begin to rotate CCW. Watch the tumblers, they should not rotate in spin cycle (maybe ½ turn at the start of spin cycle and that’s all). If the tumblers rotate while the wash basket is rotating you have a clutch malfunction and the Spin Cycle will fail with dc/UC errors. If this is not the situation move on to step 3. This is what I refer to as a soft failure and possible clean up of the clutch roller bearings in the clutch hub may restore normal clutch operation. A hard failure would be the clutch spring has failed, the roller bearings are rusted beyond clean up. A replacement clutch is required.

Pic attached for top cover removal .

Let me know if you see the tumblers rotating in Spin Only cycle and if yo hear the grinding noise. Rich

My washing machine makes a grinding noise when it is spinning. It drains alright and seems to work ok, but I`m afraid the grinding noise could lead to bigger problems.

Stone,

All owners are heading toward this issue. I feel your FAV6800A or FAV9800A is at the end of service lifew for the Tub Seal

If you open the washer lid and spin the Washer CCW and hear the noise (Outer Tub Bearing noise) then it's time to role up your sleeves.

Do you have basic DIY mech. skills and do you want to save your $1K machine?

If so Google Neptune TL Washer FAV6800AWW

In the Sticky: Neptune TL Washer FAV6800AWW 5 post down you will find a link to the Service Manual. You absolutely need the Service Manual to DIY issues with the machine. It's not the best SM but will get you started. I also have repair post in that sticky to help with the most common issues that I have helped owners with. I'm an owner of a FAV6800A top load machine.

Google this FAV6800A/FAV9800A Outer Tub bearing replacement to see what is involved in doing an Outer Tub Rebuild.

Good Luck

What is your machine model number? Is it a FAV6800A or FAV9800A TL?

If it’s a FAV6800A or FAV9800A TL do you error out in the Spin cycle of the wash cycle with an unbalance error code such as dC or uC? Is the wsh tub banging around during Spin Cycle of the Wash Cycle?

If so see this post Clutch Fix. I have a step by step maintenance/repair process for Clutch Pulley assembly issues related to the above error codes.

If it's a FAV6800A or FAV9800A run a Spin Only cycle with no clothes in

the wash basket. Do you hear noise like metal against metal? If so it could be Outer Tub Bearing noise. Please confirm you model number and first two digits of your Serial Number

Is the machine a FAV6800A or FAV9800A?

Are there unbalance codes to the display such as dC or uC?

If you can confirm the model number and what error codes to the LED display. I own the FAV6800A and can help with all issues.

Maytag neptune tl makes grinding sound and stops at 33 minutes in normal mode and at 24 minutes in quick wash mode

Hello djlampl,

With the lowest spin cycle setting I enter spin cycle in Quick Wash around the 21 minute mark. But first question is do you hear the grinding noise with the tumblers rotating during the wash/agitate cycle?

If you start a spin only cycle do you hear the grinding noise?

Does the washer error code out with an error code to the display? Codes such as dC, uC, Lr?, I assume the machine type is a FAV6800AW is that correct?

Any additional info will help in troubleshooting…..Rich

Assuming the machine type is a FAV6800A/FAV9800A here are some handy links;

something is binding as its trying to cycle, you need to dissamble and look for any loose or broken parts or call a pro out to do this. dont want to allow this to happen has more damage or irrapairable damage could occur.
