You need to push u joint further to the othe side that has cap on already and the last cap needs to be put in from the inside of the knuckle good luck it's a pain with out Press but I have always used a bench vise

How do I remove the soda bottle cap, from the drive shaft end of a 2004 Saturn Vue V6 AWD, in order to remove the yoke, when replacing the carrier bearing.


Can you post a picture of this "bottle cap".. I think you are just seeing the splines (they can kinda resemble the rough crimpings' that a bottle cap has...
There should be nothing on top / on the end of the Midship splined stub shaft... You remove the hog-ring, and press the yoke off/over the spline. the spline and end yoke have a "dead spot" - which makes you keep the driveshaft in-phase during reassembly.. the dead spot is 2 splines that have been joined together at the end.. the end yoke will have a spline removed to accommodate this...
PS - soak the end yoke and spline liberally with PB Blaster.. Walk away..the longer the better... Then attempt to remove.. Good Luck!

Removing driveshaft to tow 2004 jeep liberty


assuming you have 2wd, just unbolt the clamps that hold the u-joints to the output shaft of the tranny and the input to the differential. The u-joints should remain attached to the driveshaft, but be careful to keep the race/caps on the u-joints so as not to lose the needle bearings. You can duct tape around the joint to keep these ends on. When reinstalling, make sure the caps are pushed in to fit into the recess of the yokes before tightening the clamps. See a picture of the parts to be removed here:

there are 2 such clamps at each end of the driveshaft.

How do you remove the factory u joints on the front driveshaft of a 1999 silverado?


They are sealed in with plastic. I use a torch to burn it it out. I broke my press trying to push them out.

Repear the drivesaft universal joint


Hello, this is the type of problem I repaired as a teenager in the 60's. The U-joints have not changed and the same methods are used today. You start out by marking the driveshaft on either side of the U-joint with something durable like paint. This is done to preserve the balance in the driveshaft when you reassemble it. You line up the paint marks when you put in the new joint.

To disassemble the joint you will need to remove the driveshaft. The end by the Differential will have standard head bolts or Torx head bolts. When the driveshaft is unbolted you drop it down and pull it out of the end of the Transmission or Transfer case. The driveshaft will slide out and you may lose a small amount of transmission fluid. The seal in the transmission is usually reusable, always coat the driveshaft flange with a little lube to insure the seal does not grab and tear on reassembly.

Now you are looking at the removed driveshaft. There are "C" clips or "Snap-rings" in front of the "Caps" on the U-joint. You must remove these clips. Then position the driveshaft between blocks of wood or a good sized Vise to get clearance below the joint. Now you will fit a socket from your toolbox that just fits into the hole where you removed the "Snap-ring".

At this point you will pound the "Cap" of the U-joint through the stationary flange which formerly held the U-joint. The U-joint will be driven through the fixture and you can swing it out. To reassemble, care must be taken to keep both "Caps" on the new joint. You may clean and grease the fixture to aid in sliding in the new parts.

Should your "Caps" come off the new part, stop, and verify the needle bearings have not moved. A heavy wheel bearing grease will hold the needle bearings in place. Then install the "Snap-rings" and note that the paint lines on the driveshaft still line up.

I hope my solution has been very helpful to you. The only extra item I can mention is some U-joints have 2 different sized "Caps" on them. If the U-joint does not seem to fit into the fixture the U-joint may need to install with the second pair of "Caps" fitting into the fixture instead of the way you have yours turned.

Does "clank occur when shift fwd/rev ? Worn U joint. Can be hard to change. DIYrs bash it out with hammer(after removing driveshaft from truck) Techs use press. These trucks prone to rear flange splitting @ U joint cap. Drive shaft bearing ? :"It dont got 1" Pinion bearing in diff supports driveshaft. sometimes pinion flange nut backs off, but usually worn pinion bearing causes it to seem that way.
Block wheels,trans in neutral,crawl under and rotate shaft by hand. Listen for noise.Follow sound to movement( there should be ALMOST none.Where 1 part moves and the part attached doesnt,,theres your prob. btw "drive shaft bearing USED to be a joke.

How do you chang u joints on a 2006 ford ranger


On the rear joint.mark the driveshaft to the pinion flange,before removeing the drive shaft. To place back in original position.
Remove the u joint cap retainers. Spray some lube on the tops of the caps,for ease of removeing from the shaft ilets. Use a vice or a c clamp tool to press out the caps.Remove the caps from the new u joint.Careful not to lose any of the small needle bearings.Remove any rust that may interfere with the caps, as they are a tight fit, at the cleanest condition. Place the u joint into the opening of the drive shaft.if it has a greese fitting turn it outward to the end of the shaft or one may not be able to greese it.put one cap on the u joint, and hold the u joint inside the cap while tapping the cap down into the ilet hole of the shaft,being careful not to loose or dis locate any needle bearings.Once the cap is down in the ilet hole far enough,or about 1/4 inch too far,then place in the cap on the otherside.press the last cap all the way in which moves both caps,center the caps,so you can place in the retainer rings.The caps need be centered perfectly. On the front joint mark the slip yoke to the shaft for maintaining the original position this may cause a vibration in the drive line.And you will need to redue the joint.

How to you replace the rear u joint on a 92 ford explorer


If it's the driveshaft u-joint then you have 2 clips on each u-joint to remove. It's easier to work on if you pull the whole driveshaft. There's c-clips on top of 2 of the caps that you can remove with needle nose pliers. then tap the u-joint loose from one side to the next to get the driveshaft out. Put the driveshaft in a vise or on something sturdy and tap the u-joint from side to side to get the other 2 caps that are pressed in from the outside off of the u-joint to remove it from the drive shaft. Then pretty much reverse those directions to re-install the u-joint. Be carefull not to lose any of the bearings under the caps of the new u-joints. You can use masking tape to hold the caps on while you work with it. Hope this helps

I can't get u joint out of driveshaft. Please help


You'll want to put it in a vice and heat it up untill the plastic oozes out. Then use a drift to knock out the u-joint one way then pull out the bearing cap and then same thing back the other way.Clean the holes with some emory cloth before installing the new one.

How do you replace a center carrier bearing on an 03 Saturn Vue


about $200 in parts,,,you can not do this at home,,,,,you need special tools to press yoke on and off and even then sometimes they bend,,,not a easy job,,,,,,i am a master tech and worked at saturn for 8 years and i hated doing these
