Question about Kenmore 53642 / 53644 Side by Side Refrigerator

Fridge won't make ice

Our 2005 Kenmore refrigerator won't make ice. We have had the icemaker replaced twice, (of course after the warrenty expired). The repairman says that the laser that tells it to make ice is not making the connection, but about three or four times a month it will dump ice. Is there anything we can do other than buy a new refrigerator? Thanks.

I have the same issue. I have done the basic troubleshooting procedures. The led on the receiver is out. Does this indicate a problem with the receiver? Is there a pdf for the wiring schematic I can get to further isolate the problem? i.e. are the emitter/receiver getting power. Can I jumper the input on the receiver to get the unit to cylce? Thank You.

There is an optics test procedure you can perform on your own to confirm what the repairman says. Assuming you have a whirlpool-made Kenmore (if you have a Pur water filter at the bttom left of your unit, you do), see here:

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/8527f904cc8ea8cd85256b5800672333/$FILE/4322658A.pdf

Basically, the icemaker won't initiate a harvest (dump) cycle unless the electric eye through that cutout at the top of your icemaker can see across the top of the dispenser. If the lens is dirty, or if either the emitter or receiver boards are bad, the optics won't connect. There's a simple diagnosis procedure in that pdf above. Since your fridge is from 2005 like mine, refer to the "post 2002 redesign" optics procedure. Basically the test is to open the fridge and look at the LED, then to close the flapper on the left wall of the freezer and see the change in LED behavior. This can confirm or deny an optics issue. Also, if you remove the little plastic grille at the bottom of your fridge, there'll be a piece of paper folded and stuffed in there with the diagnostic procedure in it as well. To do the full diagnostic procedure, you'll need to remove the icemaker and install a jumper, but to debug optics only, all you need to do is open the door, close the flapper, or maybe push in the door switch and look at how the LED responds.

Does the ice maker filter have to be in for the fridge to work right it is a Kenmore Coldspot

? I don't believe there is a "Ice maker" filter just for the Ice. There is a water filter for both the icemaker and cold water (usually). Check your Owner's manual. Usually there is an option for water filter or no water filter. The no water filter option requires a "bypass" device to substitute for the filter, but of course the water is not filtered, unless you have an external water filter in the supply line to the refigirator. Hope this helps. Of course if you have no water supply, the Ice Maker will not make ice.

My icemaker does not make ice and the control unit flasshes twice then stops, repeats. I tried defrosting, but still no ice. What do I do?

If it has water going to the ice tray.Defrost and dry out the whole area, with a hair dryer. Some time the linkage will freeze up.When you defrost it it can stay wet and refreeze. If you are not getting water to the ice tray. Then replace the in line water filter. It is found inside the fridge.

You might like to know a simple statistic for refrigerators, i.e. the repair rate for any Refrigerator:side-by-side (with icemaker and dispenser) is 28%. On top of that your fridge is more than 6 yrs old. I would suggest that you go in for a new one instead and after your warranty go in for a AMC(anual maintenance contract) if the fridge is a very expensive one.

My Kenmore refrigerators (model #79177990) ice

Ice inlet tube may be frozen up inside of Fridge. Thaw it out with a hair blower. Shut of water supply and disconnect the water line that goes into the back. Use a flexable item at the connection to see if will go all the way through to the icemaker. I used a zip tie.

If you still don't have water going to the icemaker, you may need to replace the "Water Inlet Valve" at bottom back right of your Fridge. Easy to Do.

The ice makers are rather finiky. limit switches for almost every movement. Sounds excessive, but replacing the ice maker module will save you a lot of worries. The signal to fill with water comes from the icemaker when it is in the correct position

Icemaker Kenmore

You either have low water pressure to the fridge or fridge water valve is not completely closing causing water to constantly drip through fill tube, Do you have a side by side? if so does water come out steady through the door?

Fridge Leaking

the icemaker can overfill causing water to run over into the freezer
the fill cup on the back of the icemaker could be frozen letting the water overflow into the freezer

if the fill cup is not frozen then you need a modlue for the ice maker if it is whirlpool built, if ge or frigidaire design then replace the icemaker

if you got 110 volts to ice maker. try jumping out the T & H ( a small insulated copperwire) . this will cause the ice maker cycle, if this does nothing replace the ice maker.(entire assy cheaper then the parts). remeber you might have to shut the door switch to get the 110v. some machines run the power through light switch
