Front air bag did not deploy on 1992 Buick Park Avenue

A friends husband was driving a 1992 Buick Park Avenue and made a slow left turn in front of a large-size truck who it's estimated was going 35-50 miles per hour. Her husband's car was hit on the passenger side, terrible damage to the car and worse, he died a few days later from injuries sustained in that accident. His front air bag did not deploy. He was wearing his seatbelt.

Where are the front air bag sensors on this car? How are they programmed? What are they set up to react to? deceleration? or the sensors themselves being hit?

Would like to find an answer for her as it's been something that has had her wondering about it from time to time since 2000 when the accident occurred.

Thank you.

this is not the place for this discussion, u need to contact an attorney, sorry for the loose but I have no idea of the circustances are the forces involved, it takes a certain kind of impact to trigger the airbags (so called "G" forces), contact GM for detaile's/

I am very sorry for your loss.

My brother in-law was killed in an intersection as someone went through the red light. He was driving a 1998 Astro van, the airbags did not deploy. We were told that the impact had to be head on, lateral force was not a trigger to the sensors. I know that the sensors do not need to be hit, but the direction of the impact and the inertial response has to be forward or backward unless the vehicle has side impact bags. Any more information than that, I think would require lawyers to be present. The manufacturers can twist this one any way they want.

Front air bags only go off when hit in front endthey go off at 15 miles a hour

  • Texann46 Jul 13, 2010

I had head on crash in 2001 Lesabre and air bags did not deploy. The other vehicle was large pickup, and at least 4-6" downwas crushed about halfway to windshield, and glass was shattered by the hood buckling. Someone said the sensors were in bumper, which was not hit, and that was reason air bags did nothing. I don't feel safe having air bags when they don't do their job.

Have there been any unexplained air bag deployment in 2005 santa fe on the drivers side while in motion. my husband was driving and he said the air bag deployed and then he hit a car in front of him. do...

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/ is the website I checked for your car and found no reference to this issue. There are reports of airbag deployments with no collisions, although they are rare. The computer in your car is capable of displaying the deployment, and may show which sensor in the front if any caused it to deploy (collision first/deployment second) or if no sensor signal (deployment first / collision second) is logged. Whatever the outcome, you will need a specialist in data extraction to achieve this.

91 Buick Park Avenue front left caliper slow to release. Replaced caliper and have same problem. After running a few miles and jacking up front end the whell cannot be turned by hand on left side. Right...

The caliper is probably rusty inside, and is stucked. Take it apart and clean it. You may need new rubber seal as well. This will save you money over buying a new one.

The turn signal switch on 1998 Buick Park Avenue has failed, causing the right front and back signal lights to remain on even with ignition switch off. Need procedure for replacing switch and lever.

REplacing of the turn signal switch invoves the removal of the air bag and steering wheel for acess to the switch ( reminder to unplug the yellow connector for the air bag under dash first).
