First make sure that the CPU fan is properly connected to the motherboard. There is a connector on the motherboard that is usually labeled CPU_FAN.

If the fan is properly connected, but isn't working, a replacement can be purchased for a reasonable price. Check with Gateway or your local computer supply shop and they will be able to help you find the right fan assembly for your CPU.

Hope this helps. Please take a moment to rate this solution. Thanks.

Check to make sure that all of your power connectors from the power supply are properly connected to your motherboard. On most newer motherboards, there is a 20-pin connector that supplies power to the MB, and an additional 4-pin connector.

If all of your power connections are secure, and your fan is working properly when connected to a different motherboard, then it is safe to say that the motherboard itself is faulty and needs to be replaced.

My Gateway GT5412 suddenly freezes without warning, sometimes the mouse still works and sometimes not. The computer doesn't respond to anything or any button press except a hard power down, then when...

No, it has nothing to do with the fan - a program is using all the power of the processor so when you are forced to shut it down the hard way the file system gets corrupted. If you keep doing it in the end the corruption will be too great to recover and Windows will be completely gone.
To find out what program is causing this you should open Task Manager and have it set as Always On Top from the Options and on Processes tab. When the pc freezes look at it, the bad program will use more than 95% CPU. Restart the pc and uninstall that program.

At start up the message says cooling fan not working properly computer is halted....changed both fan and blower, and still get same message

Did you remove the CPU heatsink and refit it using thermal paste, then refit the power to the header on the motherboard. This is usually the fan it refers to

The CPU fan has obviously failed. You should be able to source a replacement from a good computer shop. Worth trying a warranty replacement from Gateway though.

Gw profile 5.5 motherboard fan issue - pc will not boot puchased and installed new cpu fan but still has issues.

Not sure if this solution will help you or not, but first congrats on bieng brave enough to open the case up, now what might be the solution.
This problem while not common does seem to happen once in awhile and it has to do with the fan and the connection.
On most motherboards there are two fan connections, usually one right beside the other one. Why they do this i have no idea but they do.
One of the connectors will be labelled cs or cas and the other one will have the cpu1 fan label. If you connect to the wrong connector the cpu fan does not start and this will cause the mother board to shut down power to protect the cpu.
Other problem is that most of these fans are now three wire connections and if you bought a two wire fan then the cpu will not be getting information from the fan, and again will shut down the computer to protect the cpu.
Like i said not sure if this solution will help you or not, but maybe.

Ijust replaced the cpu fan and now the computer won't boot - it just flashes the gateway logo

make sure that the power reqs for the fan are the same as one you replaced and make sure that the new fan is the same prong (3 or 4). Also make absolutely sure you plugged the new fan power supply inti the CPU fan slot

Gateway Profile 3se cooling fans don't start every time.

The Internal Fan On the cpu is always on correct? If so the external fans come on when the tower case has a temp higher than 85F. This is perfectly normal

Profile 5 shuts off on its on

Sound either like a Overheating or a Power Supply Unit issue. You may need to clean the thermal gel off the CPU and heatsink with a small amount of rubbing alcohol and apply new gel. Make sure your fans are working correctly and make sure there isn't any dust under the fan on the heat sink it self, as this will cause overheating issues... Also, if you suspect the PSU you can usually get a nicer one than you have now for $50, so it is better to go ahead and replace it if it is old. The pop sound makes me lean more towards the side of power / PSU but this sound could simply be from the hard drive lossing power suddenly.
