Acetylene torch.........weld that baby right in there.......

With the power cable itself deemed to be loose, I would replace the power cable. The sockets apparently are worn out.

Suggest go down to the nearest small computer store, and see if they have a replacement. Should be $3 to $5. (Before tax)

Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Good luck!

My Dell XPS 200 Desktop will not power up. I press the power button and nothing. It is as if it were unplugged. I am sure the power supply is OK.

You can be doubly sure that the PSU is ok by checking inside the case for LED lights on the motherboard, or by getting a cheap PSU tester from ebay or Maplins.

Seems silly but use the PC power cord in the monitor to make sure the cord works.

Finally if the PSU does work and there isnt a problem with the cord then you have a motherboard issue, it could be a MOSFET IC that needs replacing, either way its a delicate and specialist fix that will need to be undertaken by a service center. If you do go down this route make sure you use a 'no-fix no-fee' service.

The screen resolution on my Dell XPS M140 changes dramatically when on battery power. It's like everything becomes overly whitewashed and bright (so much so I can't use my laptop unless it's plugged in)....

Unfortunately, this is not a fix that you can actually do yourself. The actual battery circuit is not functioning correctly.

The transformer is supposed to regulate the amount of power running to the components, it is working, but only on AC.

It does need to be taken in for repair.

is the crackling noise constant?
if so, your hard drive is lockup on the bootup. you have to get a new hard drive.
or you can try to reformat the hard drive, but I don't think that will help.

Power supply very loose in back of laptop

This is a very common problem with laptops. The DC power jack becomes loose from too much strain on the power cord or in some cases from poor design. If you are not comfortable messing with it yourself you will have to take it to a repair shop. I would also try a different power cord first.
