Question about Symantec WinFax Pro 10.02 for PC

Winfax 10 won't retain auto receive setting

Everything works fine but when I restart the pc, the checkbox for "auto receive always on" gets unchecked in setup. I'm using xp pro sp3 winfax 10.02 usr 5699b. I've tried to add an itialization string of ATSO=2 to the modem and changing the auto receive setting while logged in as admin...still no luck. Any ideas?

I've tried both already..it all works except the auto receive settings retention

  • jaci10514 Mar 11, 2009

i use a dedicated analog line only for receiving faxes, so no other calls are received. I don't see any modem related entries in the event viewer, thanks

  • jaci10514 Mar 11, 2009

will an incorrect intialization string in the modem cause the winfax program to uncheck it's own setting?

  • jaci10514 Mar 11, 2009

I've run live update, it says I have the most current version. my modem is a 56k faxmodem...should be correct????????right USR 5699B

HI, I don't have or see any other programs which use a modem in Startup, I use a T-1 and nic card to connect to internet...thanks

  • jaci10514 Mar 11, 2009

Hi, as I mentioned, I'm using 10.02 which is compatible with xp

  • jaci10514 Mar 11, 2009

I'm not sure but in the modem area of winfax registry keys, they have a key called RxEnable and UserAutoRxMode as well as AutoRxOffTime and on time and more...they all have zeros. I think these might be the keys for auto answer...I wish I knew what to change them to????

  • jaci10514 Mar 11, 2009

Hi, this is a new install this feature has not worked yet...I'm trying to get this pc in working order to replace another on my network...this winfax problem is all that is holding me backl

  • jaci10514 Mar 11, 2009

I know how to setup auto receive in the winfax setup...my problem is that it does not keep the "always on" setting after a restart of the pc

  • jaci10514 Mar 11, 2009

When you set it to auto receive...it should stay that way even after a re-boot. That is the problem, it does not. It will stay if I close winfax and re-open it...just not a re start of the pc

  • jaci10514 Mar 11, 2009

As I mentioned, I'm setting up this pc to replace an old pc, that old pc also has sp3 and all other settings and updates as this newer one. The only difference is the new one has a P4, more RAM etc. and a newer Modem, I've tried to add strings to the modem but the auto receive still won't come back after a re-boot

  • jaci10514 Mar 11, 2009

I think I need an expert on Winfax registry keys. Thanks everyone for your suggestions but I don't think any of us are going to find the answer posted somewhere, I've tried for hours!

ARE THERE ANY EXPERTS OUT THERE???????????????

hi, sorry I've done those suggestions and many more before I posted my problem, I've set up and repaired 5 pc's this year, I've used msconfig many times, used regedit, changed BIOS,re-installed software, drivers etc.and found many solutions on forums like this, I appreciate your help but I need a little more than what we find on the symantec website...Thanks

  • jaci10514 Mar 11, 2009

Hi, thanks again but that applies to outlook 98 and winfax starter edition...i have outlook 2000 and full version winfax

  • jaci10514 Mar 11, 2009

that's doubtful but Thanks anyway.. this is a fresh xp install about a week old.I think it's in the registry

I'll try that too...why not? Thanks

  • jaci10514 Mar 12, 2009

I don't think I want to use another Norton here...It did uninstall and re-install fine as I've done it a few times without Norton...Thanks...again, everything works but the settings retention....I'm fairly sure it's in the registry

If Fax does not retain settings , regardless if you save correctingly settings both from menu on the machine, and from software, that measn that the machine has a faulty eeprom that keeps resetting and does not preserve stored settings.

An incorrect initialization string might or might not cause Winfax to reset the value - I'd check to make sure you have the right setting for auto receive in the string.

You might also want to check the Windows registry - search for any Winfax key, and see if there are any entries for AutoReceive.

You can also try editing the Win.ini file in your Windows directory, and see if there are any entries under Winfax there.

Still researching... good luck :)

Personally, I'd try changing RxEnable to 1 (rightmost digit), reset, and see what happens, then try changing UserRx.... to the same thing, reset, see what happens. Winfax 10 wasn't totally compatible with WinXP, and Symantec dropped it... I used to love it before Delrina sold out. I have another program now - very simple, straightforward, and works flawlesssly with WinXP and Vista.

Kinda like Winfax used to be.

If you're still there, I might have a quick fix for this - do you know the COM port for your modem?

  • John Aman
    John Aman Mar 12, 2009

Here is a setting you might want to look at:

    Solution
    – To receive faxes under Windows NT/2000 when you are not logged

on to your NT/2000 account, start Program Setup , double click Call

Status And Controller, click the General tab, and then enable Allow Sending And

    Receiving When Logged Off.

Whoops, meant to clarify there - obviously when you restart the computer, you're logging off your account - this may cause Winfax to abandon the AutoReceive. Please let me know if you have tried this.

If by reinstalling the software the problem is not resolved then try reinstalling the modem driver.

    Thanks

Most problems with it not auto answering your calls are modem initialization strings or hardware issues. Go to control panel-> Event viewer-> check the event logs to see if any info is there, and sometimes winfax will tell you if there is a issue with the modem if there is another call/fax that comes through and it tries to answer (it could be in the middle of a initialization string and didnt terminate it properly)

  • Rylee Smith
    Rylee Smith Mar 11, 2009

Also update your winfax edition to the newest version from 10.02 to 10.03. You can do this by running live update (if the update is available for you, it will install it).

Also install this update from microsoft and check if it makes any diffrence---

    Microsoft Update

Also, make sure you use a controller based modem with Winfax. No soft or win modems.

  • Rylee Smith
    Rylee Smith Mar 11, 2009

Go to the Winfax program and select Tools- Program setup- receive and uncheck the auto receive tick box. Winfax is now in manual mode otherwise it will always load itself and answer your incoming call/fax if the box is left unchecked.

  • Rylee Smith
    Rylee Smith Mar 11, 2009

    To enable auto recieve settings---

    1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
    2. On the Fax tab, under Modem, click to select the Automatic Receive Fax check box.
    3. Click OK to have the new settings take effect.

Also, see this article from symantec for your refrence---

    Winfax Auto receive Options

This answer probably is coming to you too late, but the problem is with the registry. Whatever account you are using doesn't have proper write access to the registry specific for WinFax. You can make changes but once you reboot, those changes are reset to the original settings.

From what I'm reading on the Symantec web site
WinFax Pro 10.03 CAN be made to work, but Symantec is hopeless. They blame the modem manufacturers, but the problems lie (sic) in the Symantec code. Of course, the additional issue is that if you have the even crappier V10.01 or V10.02, you have to pay Symantec $50 for an upgrade to the slightly-less-crappy v10.03.

If i may ask, did this ever work for you before you had this problem. In my opinion, i believe another modem software starts up with Windows that overrides the setting for auto recieve. Please check in start, run, and type msconfig. Got to the startup tab and see if you can find any modem related software apart from Winfax and uncheck it. Place a check mark in auto recieve and restart to test...

Please let me know if this works

I think i may know what the problem is. Your Winfax version is 10? or 10.2?

Please see the link below. Apparently ver 10 is not compatible with Windows XP. you need an upgrade.

    Hi,

I apologize for my suggestion, i didnot apparently read your post correctly.

This still leads me back to the startup of your windows. Please check your services that startup automatically. Go to control panel, look for Administrative Tools, and then open "services".

In the list of services, you should see applications with the settings for manual or automatic on the right.

Check and see if you can find Winfax and see if it is set to manual or automatic.

Also, I read a post on the winfax site stating that if you right click on the winfax icon in the systray, and select to automatic recieve, the setting stays even after a reboot.

This issue is very common with Windows 2003 server operating systems, but Windows XP too.

Please let me know if any of my suggestions work.

The sp3 is still in beta (trial) stage and is not even half as compatible as sp1 or2 is. Make sure it is compatible with your system requirements. If it is, then check to make sure it is allowed through any firewalls. Check to make sure you are logged on as "administrator" of your computer when changing any program settings. In winfax properties, make sure you have full permission to change and apply any settings for winfax.

A modem will start up automatically with the computer because it is hardware. You can go to "device manager" find your modem and check to make sure it's drivers are up to date and it will also tell you if the device is "enabled" or disabled" and if it is functioning properly or not. Do you have a regular modem or the actual fax modem with the indicator light? They are two different types of dial-up and ether-net. Regular and Fax.

Make sure you have the correct string settings for your modem. If they are the least bit incorrect, you will not have a properly functioning connection

I recommend you download "glary utilities". It's a free download. It cleans and repairs registry errors, removes trojans, optimizes, and MUCH MUCH MORE!

Much better than reg cure or cc cleaner!

GLARY UTILITIES WILL REPAIR YOUR REGISTRY, REMOVE SPYWARE, OPTIMIZE MEMORY, DEFRAGER, START-UP OPTIMIZER, CORRUPT OR DUPLICATE FILE REMOVER/REPAIR, AND MORE.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Have you tried temporarily disabling the antivirus when installing, configuring/setting. Thereafter on the first reboot, still maintain the antivirus off and check if your setting has been saved? Soon as it is, the reactivate the antivirus.

Additionally, you may have to do the same if you have any registry lock such as Ad-Watch/Ad-Aware.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Winfax 10.03 Instalation

Try installing winfax from safe mode. I was having the same problem and this worked for me. However, when you install from safe mode, you will get error messages staing that the printer driver can not be installed. Do not worry about this, as you can install the printer drivers manually. Now, when you do the install, halfway thru, you will need to restart your computer. If you restart and the install does not finish by itself, go to program files, look for the winfax folder, open it and you will see another winfax folder. Open that, and first click the file INSPRINT.exe. This will manually install the print drivers. Second, click WNTSETUP, this will continue the install process.

Receiving Fax Line always 'busy'

Installing fax software can be tricky, particularly if you want to import phone-book listings from an existing database or PIM, such as Microsoft Outlook. But WinFax Pro proves easy to configure. A series of introductory screens walks you through installation; you just click Next to accept the default configuration. In our tests, WinFax Pro accurately detected our fax modem and seamlessly imported our contacts from Microsoft Outlook. By comparison, competing fax programs either don't import directly from Outlook or make the process trickier than it needs to be. you can try to look on website and there will explain to you. http://reviews.cnet.com/e-mail/winfax-pro-10-0/4505-3536_7-1536745.html

Winfax pro problem

This is a solution that was suggested for an earlier edition of the Winfax Pro, but there is no reason why it shouldn?t work on this one as well: 1. Close Winfax and any other program that has anything to do with it, delete all the temp files that yo don?t need. 2. Run Scandisk and fix any problems that may come up. 3. Run delfix.exe which is located in the winfax folder in the status files. 4. Run delfix-rebuild and delfix-optimize and check if the problem is solved. If the problem reoccurs there is another possibility- to change the name of the WinFax\data folder and create a new one which you will transfer the address book file, status files etc. from the old folder. Note that there might be some information that wouldn?t go through.
