Remove plug , 4 screws from the base and plastic operating handle. Lift metal surround to reveal internal mechanism. You will see toast carriage is kept down by electro-magnet in the base of the unit. This will probably be dirty covered with bread debris and needs cleaning. Check that the metal plate on the bottom of the plastic "V" can actually touch the magnet when the toast carriage is pushed down. Voila Problem solved for another 5 years !!

Is the outlet live? Try an outlet you know is working. Is the GFI "blown" if so reset it.

Hi my girlfriend just gave me this toaster, and would like to know what the lighted buttons are for thanks

Since you don't mention the make or model number of the toaster or its age I can only make the following guesses.
It might be an electronic model. To test if this is the case, leave the toaster unplugged and push the lever of the toaster down. If it does not stay down it is an electronic toaster. If it stays down then it is NOT electronic.
The lights might be lighted push buttons.
If you plug the toaster in then put a slice of bread or two in and push the lever handle down and one light comes on then this is probably a dual purpose pushbutton. It indicates that the heating elements are on and if you push it will cancel the toasting cycle and the bread slices should pop up.
If there is a button beside the above button it could be for extending the toaster cycle time a bit longer to compensate for a thicker slice or a denser bread like a bagel. If you push it, it will light up to let you know that the cycle has been extended for this reason.
If there is a button beside this one, it could be for extending the toasting cycle to compensate for a frozen slice of bread or whatever, like a bagel or even a frozen waffle.
If you find the make and model for your toaster, it might be on the bottom somewhere, google it to see if you can download an instruction manual for it.
Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Control lever will not stay down

Unless you have power switch on to the toaster, the level will not stay down. Ensure you have main power available!
If the unit is powered, check that the 'toast darkeness' level is set accordingly - it is this 'thermostat' that determines when to eject the toast: if you checked that you have power and that the darkness level is not set to zero and it still does not work, then it is time to get a new toaster! If not under warranty, it is probably not worth trying to get it repaired.

Constant use can lead to crumbs clogging the path of the lever. Try opening up the bottom panel, by pulling on the metal tab to release the plate (and crumbs!) over a trash can. Also try flipping the toaster upside down and, very gently, shaking the crumbs out. if that doesn't work, you can try checking the toaster's browning dial. This might be too low to activate the heating coil. Try dialing it up, and pushing the lever down again. I hope this helps. You can check our post on Best ways to use a Toaster oven. Sunbeam toaster model 6253 After placing two slices of bread and pushing down the leaver, leaver does not stay locked. What can I do to fix.

This is a maechanical fault and all you need to do is look for a lock that clicks to hold the tray down .This latch is controlled by the bimetal which when hot moves off and releases the tray.
So this strip could have moved off or damaged with use.
Might have to replace or try to repair to keep it in the lock postion..

When i push down the lever it doesn't stay down

remove the housing & you will probably notice the 2 ceramic pieces are burned out. (They maybe plastic) But these are the 2 pieces and the 2 long metal contact points that come together when the lever is pushed down. The 2 metal contact strips come together & make the eletronic connection to start the heating process. let me know if you find the parts.

Lever on toaster will not stay down

For what it might cost to fix it buy a better brand of toaster for about 10% of the cost of this horrible brand.
You'll notice their new ones are "smart" toasters with NO LEVER. You push a button and the electronics takes care of the rest (and blow up quickly.)
$15 to $25 at Walmart.. instead of $100 to $200.

I have a pink two slicer kitchen aide Toaster. The button to pull down the bread to toast will not stay on. Where can I order/buy a new pink one? thanks kathie

Before tossing out the toaster, check on the inside of the toaster, you may have a wire bread closure in there that is blocking the lever.

I took my son's toaster apart when they replaced it, and found a bread closure inside it, blocking the lever. Anything small enough to fall inside could do this too. (The toaster works fine now, and I use it myself!)

Make sure you unplug the toaster first, you don't want to have a "shocking" experience.

Turn the toaster upside down and shake it a few times, over the kitchen sink, and then open and clean the "crumb" compartment.

Sorry to tell you this, but, your toaster is no longer available on the market, you might want to check a few thrift shops in your area...or you can check this link for another model that is pink and a KitchenAid.

Russell Hobbs RH2T toaster bread won't stay down w/o hold handle

Hi, most new toaster have a selenoid that hold down the handle while toasting then release when done so a spring bring the toast up. Possible problem with the selenoid, the electronic circuit that controls it or the plate that the selenoid holds. When you lower the handle you close the contacts of the AC line inside the toaster so if the handle is raised there is no power.
