Question about Passport Solo Radar Detector

1 Answer

Won't go off

Comes on, lights up, has sound but in 4 weeks of use it has never gone off.

I have a newer escort in my truck I purchased brand new about a year ago and its works perfect.

I travel approx. 75 miles a day and the one in my truck will go off and least once or twice a day for good reason but the Solo I purchased used about 4 weeks ago for my car has yet to make a sound except when I turn it on. I travel the same route with both.

The first thing to try is to do what is called a "factory reset". What this does is to force your RD to reload all of its factory default settings straight out of the programmed firmware. These new settings will then overwrite any present settings which may be corrupted. Here is how to do it (specifically for the Solo S2):

Solo S2’s Factory Settings
To reset Solo S2 to its original factory settings, press and hold the Mute and M (Mode) buttons while turning Solo S2 on.Solo S2’s display will provide a “Reset” message, accompanied by an audible alert, acknowledging the reset.

My radar detecor has connection problem. Its not the cord. I purchased a new cord and same problem. When I plug the power cable into the escort It does not power up fully. As push the "clip" end...

The problem with your Escort radar is the charging port. It is slacked and need to be replaced. That is why, when you are connecting your charger to it, you have to adjust it to get the proper fitting. Once you plug in a charger into any device over a period of time, it tends to loosen grip and contacts bit by bit It can take years to arrive at the slack point.
SOLUTION: First try cleaning the contacts/charging port, if that does not solve the problem, then it means replacing the contacts/charging port is the last resort.

I recently purchased a used cobra 6050 radar detector, it passes self test but doesn't alert on anything. What should I do?

Unfortunatly most people don't get rid of a good working radar detector, check with the manufactor they usually have a mail in repair service but depending on what they're gonna charge you, you might be better off buying a new one - I have found Escort to be very good and I've had several brands.

Need new spearker

This model has been out of production for quite some time. You could try contacting Uniden to see if, by chance, they still have some replacement speakers for this older RD model. In any event, you would be well served to purchase a modern radar detector which provides far better performance. Personally, I recommend products produced by the following manufacturers:

Bel
Escort
Whistler (their higher end products -- XTR-690 model or higher. Their Pro78 or newer Pro78SE is one of my favorites.)

How do i replace a broken speaker in passport 9500i

The speaker is manufactured by PUI, but it is a custom OEM job for Escort. So you can't get it from any distributor or from PUI. In the late summer of 2007 Escort started installing a new "high temp" speaker. This new speaker looks just like the original speaker, but it is designed to be able to handle very high temperatures without blowing. If your 9500i is still in warranty, Escort will replace the speaker with the new "high temp" speaker, test and calibrate your 9500i, and install whatever their latest firmware is. If your 9500i is out-of-warranty, then you should call them and see if they will send you a replacement "high temp" speaker for a small charge. The speaker is easy to replace. A good while back I posted on radardetector.net detailed instructions on how to replace a 9500i speaker. It takes all of 10 minutes to do.

8500 Alerts for no aparent reason

Got to the bottom of my false alarming situation. I finally called Escort and discussed the behavior with the technician who immediately concluded the antenna was failling and needed a repair. $30 worth of shipping and about a week later I got my repaired unit back and it works perfectly. Not sure the root cause but I am going to treat it as gently as possible and hope it keeps working, I sure like it better than the V1.

How does one get your detector recalibrated? Mine suddenly lost sensitivity

Only Bel/Escort has the expertise and instrumentation to recalibrate your radar detector. They automatically do other things whenever you send in a RD for service. For example, aside from diagnosing and repairing any issues (I think that your RD's antenna needs to be replaced or repaired), they also recalibrate it, fully test it, and update its internal computer firmware to whatever the most recent firmware is. In short, when your RD comes back, it performs just like a brand new RD.
