SOURCE: Mantis 2-stroke tiller won't start

This could be one of several problems...
• Last year's fuel. Get some fresh gas.
• Every 2-stroke needs a new spark plug each year... you know what that means.
• Clogged carb jets due to storing the tiller over the winter with fuel in the system. Never, ever do that. Now you'll need to pull the carb apart and clean it. Most of the orifices are so tiny you can't see them. Good luck.
• Engine is so old the crankshaft seals have hardened with age. This is one reason no 2-stroke lasts longer than about 8 years. If the seals are shot, then it will cost more to fix than a new one costs. Time to toss it.

SOURCE: trouble starting old Mantis tiller 9012 - don't have a manuel -

Mantis has the owners manuals in pdf format available for download on its website. The tillers are here (I hope the link to the tiller group works...if not, just go to the main site and look for "owners manuals" link.

Also, you can call a number and get a representative who usually can help at the numbers listed there, find authorized service people if its not something you can do yourself, order parts and find detailed schematics in the owners manuals. My dog actually ate mine. LOL. But they are free, the owners manuals, unlike other places that charge you for them like they were a "part".

SOURCE: Left my 5 hp tiller out in the rain..now no spark to plug.

There is a gap between these two parts. I always just used a dollar bill to gap them and it always worked. .010 is the proper gap.

Have an old troy bilt tiller, spark plug gap for tecumseh engine

Hi Jesse:
SPARK PLUG AIR GAP ON ALL MODELS IS
.030 (.762MM)
NOTE:
Not all spark plugs have the same heat range or reach. Using an incorrect spark plug can cause severe engine damage or poor performance. Tecumseh uses all three of the reaches shown.

Mantis will not start - has good fuel and new sparkplug

Check spark plug gap and functionality of throttle. I all is OK it could be flooded. If flooded. Remove spark plug and pull cord a helf a dozen time to clear it out. Replace plug with correct gap and start her up! Gap is .035-040 inches. If you don't have a guage, 40 thou is about 1/6".

What is left to do but change the flywheel?

check what they call air gap between the coil and flywheel .010-.012 gap
also be sure your flywheel is in time.
you will actually have to remove it to do this and check for the sheared key or be sure the key way aligns with the crankshaft keyway on the flywheel

Spark plug not sparking

The points are set at 20 thousands. If you installednew ones you may have to use a fine point file to clean them a little sometimes they put a coating on them to keep them in storage ,the armature has a gap of 10 thousands you can use an index card to set these.

Will not start

Spark plug not fouled? Spark plug wire properly seated on spark plug? Sounds like there is rust on the rotating part that creates the spark (magneto?). Clean (lightly sand/clean with steelwool) and check the gap. Make sure the whole thing is bright metal. Then verify your getting a spark.

I have a brand new mantis 2 cycle tiller which won't start. I don't believe I'm getting a spark through the plug. Does anyone know what the gap should be for the sparkplug?

when trying to test for spark. remove it from the cylinder hole. attach it to the plug cable (the part that normally attaches to it but you had to take off to remove the spark plug) then hold it to any steel part of the engine or a table... try not to shock yourself. that method does work, but it isn't good for you, especially if you have an unknown heart condition. if there is no spark, check the gap. usually about .2, and then try again. if there is still no spark you may need to check the timing and armiture on your engine.
