I'm using a t41 laptop running XP and am having trouble getting in to turn
on. Power is going to it and it starts to switch on (fan starts to run) but
the screen or nothing comes on. The symbol on the front with a 'Z' on it
(at the bottom of the screen) is lit up. Is this something to do with it
hibernating. Tried to press some function switches but to no avail Any
help appreciated Tia

Try to press the power button for a couple of seconds to first turn off the machine
completely and then turn it back on. What happens?
Assuming that there is no hardware failure, software booboos or a virus (say,
infecting the master boot record) try pressing any key while booting the machine -
maybe it is in diagnostic mode..? If still no go, press Fn-F4 to put it in the
stand-by mode and then press and hold down the Fn key for a few seconds to wake it
up. What happens? Or put it to sleep (Fn-F12) and then press the power button for a
few seconds. If the above still fails to bring the machine to life try to boot from
the CD ROM (with the Windows CD) - look at the screen at boot up and follow the
prompts. If still no go - send the damn thing back it IBM (if it's still under
warranty) or seek a friendly IBM repair tech.

The "Z" symbol is a representation of a lightning bolt and means the unit is
powered on.
Check that all memory is fully seated.
Check your startup processes in msconfig.
Defrag your HD.
Check for adware and spyware.
Run your virus checker.
Report back.
Regards,
James
