How to replace flex shaft model 316292710 craftsman tiller

A rock jammed between tine and casing; the tines stopped but the engine continued to run; suspect flex shaft broke. I am looking for replacement instructions.

SOURCE: my craftsman mini tiller 316292710

Hello.
There is a product called "thread Lock" that can be purchased from most hardware or automotive supplies shops. this product is like a glue that can be put on the bolts before tightening them up and it will help keep them in place. Make sure the bolts are clean from dirt or grease also before using it.
Vibration from the motor the most likely cause of the bolts coming loose all the time, this product will stop this.
I hope this helps, Regards GM

Hi bh1149...
You have bad gears on the inside of the tiller gear box...
I had this same problem with mine.
You will have to take the gearbox apart in order to know what parts are bad.
Be sure to check the lube more often when you install the new gears/parts.
Go to the following website and order your parts.

Tiller runs great just having a problem with the tines turning plowed my garden last week and for some reason the tines quit turning like its locked or something please help me

Two possibilities. Something has jammed the tines.
Pull the spark plug wire off and tuck it away someplace so as not to touch the plug.
Tip the tiller up and examine the tines for obstacle such as a rock. If there is nothing jammed try to turn the tines by hand. If the they turn freely you most likely broke a shear pin that secures the tines to the axle.Clean the axle and tines and examine very closely for the pin.
If sheared ( broken) you will need to drive the broken piece out and replace the pin.
There may also be a problem in the transmission case. You would need to remove the tines and case to open it

Tines on tiller

-Check the locking bolt that hold the tine shaft to the main shaft. Possibly it's broken. If so replace new bolt. you should be good to go again.

Good Luck

If you cant move the tines by hand then I wouldn't think you sheared the pins, more like a gear box problem.

It appears that the gear case on your model is not capable of being serviced. The cost is over 300 dollars. There is a shear pin or similar connection in the case where the shaft connects to the pulleys. It has broken off and the shaft has no torque now.

If the tiller tines where jammed, the tranny and motor where still trying to turn and there could be a couple different parts broken. The tranny main shaft make have busted, the tranny gears could have jammed. If the motor does start, than that is a good sign. If not than the connecting rod or crank may have snapped.

I am guessing you will probably have to dismantle the transmission and see if there are any broken gears or shaft.

It sounds like the belt just stretched. Now you need to move the belt tensioner over to put more pressure on it.
