Rear Projection TV -- Bright spot with yellow edges on TV screen

A couple of days ago the color on the TV (an Akai rear projection TV) suddenly looked very faded, and when the screen is blank, it is not black, but has a brighter center and yellowish/green color around the edges. Any idea what this might be? Any help would be much appreciated.

Akai 52" rear projection...colors are off and screen is washed yellow

Sounds like the blue gun has died. I would say that you should call Salvation Army and have them collect it for you and buy a new LED flat screen TV to replace it.

Akai rear projection tv suddenly stopped working.

This set with Akai is actually made by Samsung (they own and use the Akai name).

If lamp light etc and you have heard a cracking sound it may be the color wheel.

You can remove the lamp and look where it faces--look and the wheel can be seen----is it shattered or missing plastic pieces?

The wheel commonly fails in this fashion and is turning at over 12,000 rpm. The set will detect if the wheel is stopped or moving too slow and just what you describe will happen.

Wheel is widely available and You Tube has video instructions for replacing them by model number.

Yellow spots

As long as your convergence adjust properly the board has nothing to do with the new symptoms, yellow spots are associated with the blue picture tube, you can check for dirt on the face of the tube, you can check if the spots move like water when you move the unit to see if is short in fluid,be careful when checking with the back removed. You can cover the face of each tube to see if the spots are in the other colors.Let Us know if you need more help.
