Replacement Bulb for Maytag Microwave MMV1153AA

I have a two year old Maytag over-the-range microwave that I needs to have the night light bulb replaced. When I installed the new bulb, the light stays on constantly and does not go OFF or to either of the intermittent settings. I have replaced the bulb successfully before, but this time with the same replacement bulb it does not work. Any advice would be appreciated (I miss the extra light above my cook top!)

SOURCE: Maytag Rangehood Microwave Loud Humming

Sounds like you just fried your magnetron. Normally when they go bad, they make a very loud noise like what you described. The smell concerns me because you may have ruined the waveguide as well. If the magnetron burns through the protective painted surface of the waveguide, the waveguide is ruined. In most microwave ovens this means replacing the entire unit because the waveguide is not replaceable. Putting a new magnetron in a damaged waveguide will result in the same arcing and eventual failure. In addition to the magnetron, the following components are part of the same high voltage network: HV Transformer HV Diode HV Capacitor Magnetron Thermal Cut-Out Any one of these components could have also been damaged. I DO NOT recommend taking any voltage measurements inside the HV network. Potentials of over 4000 volts can be reached and make it very dangerous for the do-it-yourselfer. Taking resistance readings with the unit unplugged is strongly encouraged. If you decide to pursue a repair, inspect the magnetron tip and inside of the waveguide first. If the magnetron is melted and/or there are burn marks inside the waveguide, a new microwave may be a in order. This actually may be a better option than an expensive repair. I hope you find this advice helpful.

SOURCE: MAYTAG mmv4205aab OVER THE RANGE MICROWAVE

It could easily be a bad line fuse and/or line filter. To access you will need to unplug the unit and remove the outside case. Inside the unit, where the A/C power cord comes in, there should be a small circuit card (part #237068) located somewhere with a fuse mounted on it. This is your input line filter board with line fuse. Replace the fuse, first and see if this fixes your problem. This is a 20amp appliance fuse that you can purchase at any hardware store. Make sure you place the cover back on the unit BEFORE you plug it in. It is not safe to have this area of the microwave exposed with power applied. High potentials in the 4,000 volt range are present! If the fuse does not correct your problem, the circuit card runs about $26.00. Good luck and hope this fixes your problem.

Generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:

- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose connection on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part

SOURCE: noisy microwave not cooking

Is it making a louder than usual; buzz or hum when you try to cook?

If so, I would suspect a shorted high voltage diode ore a bad magnetron.

SOURCE: Microwave stopped working while cooking. Is there a fuse?

If the display is not working, there is a fuse inside the cabinet. You will need to take the unit down from the wall and open it up.

Chances are, either the controller board has failed, or something having to do with the magnetron, transformer, diode or capacitor (the microwave circuit.). More likely it's the controller, as when the microwave circuit fails, the display usually continues to display.

ALWAYS REPLACE THE FUSE WITH A FUSE OF THE SAME RATING!

You should try to at least find the same wattage. The light bulbs are not dangerous safety hazards if they are made to fit microwaves.

The night light switch on my maytag over the range microwave will not work

I am assuming you changed the bulb. Anything that sits over a stove will become mucked up with grease and cooking oils etc. That can prevent the bulb from seating in the socket, the switch from making contact, etc. Unplug the unit, remove the bulb and get int here to clean the grease out. That should fix it.

My stove light is out and replacing the bulb does not fix it

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid with a one year guarantee.

At our Web site, you can get details of our service, plus we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

The lights can can be inoperable or stuck on or stuck in "night light" mode. Sometimes this will similarly affect the fan operation or inside light, too.
